Riftroot Pie

History

Riftroot pie dates back to early days of the settlement at the edge of reality. It was created by the early settlers as a traditional way of celebrating a new horizon through the creation of a dish using local ingredients. In this case settlers used "Riftroots" a hearty, yet neutral tasting root found growing on the moon’s surface and "Celestrix berries" a small sweet plump berry found near the ruins of a crashed vessel. Settlers presume these ingredients were not always native to the moon but were brought there some time ago around when terraforming efforts were initiated. Given their unique appearance and flavour however it is likely the plants have since adapted to their rather unique environment and spread, becoming their own unique variety native only to this settlement.

Uses

This delicacy while prepared once to celebrate the resilience of the settlers establishing a community in such a dangerous and unforgiving environment now serves as a small prize for merchants and travellers who successfully complete their first journey to the settlement unscathed. It serves as a symbol of achievement, welcoming them to the community by offering them a unique and unforgettable taste from the settlement at the edge of reality.

Recipe & Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 2 cups roasted Riftroot, mashed
  • 1 cup diced Celestrix Berries
  • 1 cup Farlight Spice Mix (a blend of aromatic spices and herbs)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • Pastry Crust (Replicated or homemade)

Recipe

Preheat oven to 190°C
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the mashed Riftroot, diced Celestrix Berries, Farlight Spice Mix, sugar, butter, flour, salt and vanilla extract. Mix well until all the ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  2. Roll out the pastry crust and line a pie with it. Trim any excess crust hanging over the edges.
  3. Pour the Riftroot filling into the prepared pie crust and spread evenly.
  4. Cover the filling with a lid of pastry crust, crimping the edges to seal the pie.
  5. Cut a few slits on the top crust to allow steam to escape during baking
  6. Place the pie in the oven and bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
  7. Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving
  8. Slice into portions and serve warm. It can be enjoyed on its own or with a side of your favourite frozen dairy derivative
(Note: This is a unique original recipie for the people of Farlight, for non-settlement residents Riftroot can be substituted for Parsnips, Celestrix Berries for Strawberries and Farlights Spice Mix for a blend of cinnamon, nutmeg and clove)
