Overview & Progression
Dareblades are self-employed individuals who refine their skills through firsthand experience and dedicate themselves, for the most part, to the protection of the vulnerable. While some begin their journey as apprentices under seasoned Dareblades, the profession lacks centralised training or oversight. It is a perilous and eclectic field where expertise is forged through trial and error. The only source of progression a Dareblade sees, aside from the honing of their skills, is the gradual generation of their reputation and legend as stories of their deeds and work spread through a populace.
Generally, those within this profession take on the responsibility to uphold justice, protect those who cannot protect themselves and eliminate more dangerous criminal groups. The profession attracts all sorts of lawless individuals with the only thing distinguishing them from reckless vigilantes is their strong moral code to protect the innocent. A Dareblade, driven by the pragmatism of their profession, will readily accept payment from a mob moss to eliminate a nefarious rival. Their moral compass would see no problem with this, when it comes to neutralising individuals who pose a threat or harm to innocent civilians, but would lead them to flatly refuse a job that involved causing harm to the civilians themselves. Payment may be a driving force, but their principles remain steadfast in protecting the innocent.
Payment and Benefits
Dareblades typically work on a contract basis, negotiated for the job’s complexity and risk. Sometimes they will accept a job for no fee if they believe in the cause. Given the selective nature of the work they will often augment their income by acting as bounty hunters if the need arises.
The benefits of working as a Dareblade come mostly from the independence and accepting jobs on their own terms. Over the years they will often build extensive networks of contacts, information’s and even tailored equipment and gear if they make the right friends as their reputation builds which often grants them more lucrative contracts and opportunities. Due to the nomadic nature of their profession, Dareblades often find themselves assuming the role of impromptu investigators and even archaeologists. The very nature of their work frequently leads them to distant and exotic locations, presenting opportunities to delve into mysteries and uncover secrets, making side-jobs such of this a useful hobby to pursue.
Social Status
While much of their work is beneficial to the wider populace their perception in society varies. Dareblades often come from diverse backgrounds leading to a range of opinions and, reputations with some less than benevolent individuals sullying the name of being a true Dareblade. For most however the job carries a fearsome reputation making them high respected for the professionals that they are.
Provided Services and Legality
Dareblades will often arrive in new settlements and offer their services either within local establishments or in more subtle advertisements. These services mainly include acting as security/protection for individuals, carrying out investigations often when local forces have given up or are too busy themselves or finally, bounty hunting for specific targets.
The perception of their work within local laws varies from place to place, in some areas they are seen as operating within the confines of the law as many do assist local enforcement services however there are worlds and sectors where their work is seen as borderline or outright illegal, often branding them dangerous nuisances. To get around this, some jurisdictions require Dareblades to obtain licences to operate within their borders or limit their activity to certain roles to ensure their accountability.
