Backstory
Part of the famous House Van Vermeer, which are world renowned artists whose paintings are highly sought after and are slightly magical. Each generation of Vincent Van Vermeer paints one masterpiece with their family heirloom, The Great Brush of Van Vermeer, although other paintings are made with normal supplies they are not worth as much as the masterpieces of House Van Vermeer. Little is know about the brush among commoners and others outside the House Van Vermeer, but inside it is know that the very first Vincent Van Vermeer discovered the brush while out on a self discovery journey to clear his art block.
Every time a brush is passed down to another Vincent, along with it comes a mystery letter explaining how the brush works and is signed with a mysterious dwarven symbol. Vincent XXIX however was not quick to dismiss this symbol like the rest of his family, although not being handed down the Great Brush yet, because he had not reached the proper age of 30, Vincent still took the Great Brush every night to go to town and defend the common folks. Unbeknownst to the rest of his family, Vincent is the first ever Vincent to use the Great Brush as a weapon, as it has a surprisingly sharp end.
Moreover he is the first Van Vermeer to leave their estate in over 2 decades. He was inspired to leave the estate when he realized that previous Vincent’s masterpieces have all been painted within the estate and they all look the same and dull, he left to find inspiration for his masterpiece, taking the Great Brush with him, but instead he found villains at every turn. Thieves and murders ravage the people of Kauvet but worse are the corrupt nobles who he knows personally who do much worse then the others. Every night he snuck out in disguise to protect the helpless and put on a show while he’s at it, as Maskelangelo.
After "The Foe of Many Faces" was published and Vincent was outed as Maskelangelo, him and his father Vincent Van Vermeer XXVIII got into a huge fight which resulted in the elder Vincent revoking the brush from his son and putting him on lockdown in the estate. With help from his mother Victoria and his loyal aid Virgil, Vincent was able to escape the estate, located in Vienna, and steal the Great Brush back to solve it's mysteries.
With the letter he received when he first stole the Great Brush as his only clue, Vincent headed to the nearest dwarven settlement, the Cemen Zerin in Mt. Yamin. The dwarves there, although very friendly, were not the ones who crafted the Great Brush but recognized the seal on his letter and pointed him in the direction of Mt. Ambolt and the Fjellsmie.
After a long and arduous journey, he finally reached Mt. Ambolt. The dwarves were not quick to have him as a guest, but after showing them the Great Brush they confiscated it from him and let him in. They asked him what he did to the blade and how'd he'd gotten it back from the elves. Confused, Vincent said he hadn't done anything to it, it was a family heirloom. The dwarves yelled at him saying they forged the blade that was the handle of the brush and a family of elves called the Presches stole it from them years ago. Vincent asked if they would be willing to let him keep the blade, they agreed on yes saying it had been tarnished by elven enchantment and on the condition that he not let the blade fall into elf hands ever again. Vincent agreed and was swiftly kicked out of Mt. Ambolt.
His next stop was Glimmerbrook to talk with the infamous Presch family and the part they played in the Great Brush's history. Upon his arrival to Glimmerbrook he was immediately approached by a guard saying the head of the Presch family wished to speak with him and that they were expecting him. He was brought in front of the heads of the family, and they confirmed that they did take the blade from the dwarves of Mt. Ambolt and attach a paintbrush to it simply because they could. They also revealed that they were the one who gave the Great Brush to the first Vincent all those years ago with the stipulation that you're allowed to keep the brush but any money you make from paintings will be split 60/40 with the Presch family. They offered the same thing to Vincent which he begrudgingly accepted. Now with the history of his family's brush solved, Vincent wanders Kauvet in search of inspiration.
