The Noctuid

Description

The Noctuid (they/it) is an Archfey on the High Council. The Noctuid's true form is very much like that of our world's Mothman -- a large vaguely humanoid figure, about seven feet tall, with massive black mothlike wings and glowing red eyes. They have two pairs of mothlike antennae. Being constantly cloaked in shadow, more distinctive features are hard to make out; even if you were to look at it in broad daylight, you'd find them difficult to perceive.   Looking upon the Noctuid's true form immediately inspires fear in most mortals, which is why it has a secondary form to communicate with them. This form is more humanoid, though still abnormally tall and lanky, bearing two pairs of arms tipped with spindly clawed fingers. Its skin is a pale sallow grey and its eyes are too-large and pure black. Its ears are long and pointed, and it also wears its two sets of fluffy antennae in this form. Upon close inspection, it has faint facial markings that resemble tear tracks, and similarly faint tattoos lace like cracks across the skin of their shoulders and chest. Unruly sable hair falls to their lower back. They sometimes allow their wings to appear in this form, and though they still look like shadow made solid, faded patterning is visible. If the Noctuid were to bleed, its blood turns into moths.   The Noctuid is reclusive. Their demeanor is strange even by Fey standards, carrying itself with a simultaneous sense of intense interest and deep indifference. Its curiosity is insatiable, but that does not mean it cares about the subjects of its curiosity. It is not kind, nor is it actively cruel. It simply is, and employs many strategies to gather information.

History

They're quite ancient and their knowledge is vast. They act as something of a spymaster for the High Council, having a large network of informants and agents of their will, though they give direct orders to very few. It has prevented several assassinations of fellow Council members both through prophecy and the intelligence it receives from its agents. Once it failed. Never again.

Trivia

  • The Noctuid is extremely difficult to track down, even by magic.
  • Some believe that the Noctuid does not have a true name.
  • Despite their natural prowess for divination, it does not like to be called a Seer.
