Captain Bombbeard
Captain Bombbeard (he/him) is a character played by Cole (they/them) in the Brightgleam Gladiators one-shot. He is a kobold forge domain cleric 8/fighter 2, and a pirate.
Description
He has red scales with faintly luminescent blue eyes like a gas fire. He's 3 feet tall, 30 pounds, wearing 90 pounds of plate armor. He's always wearing his salt-tarnished armor and his captain's hat, which is more properly a captain's helm since it's made of metal. Captain is loud, boisterous, brash, coarse, and generally piratical. He's prone to good-natured jabs and shows of bravado. Despite this, he only loses his temper when somebody is foolish enough to get past his formidable defenses and actually draw blood. He doesn't need to lose his temper to engage in wanton acts of destruction though; that's just his idea of a good time.Backstory
Captain Bombbeard's pre-seafaring past is somewhat of a mystery. He showed up at the wharf, demanded induction into a crew, and fell in with a pirate crew of no notable repute that happened to be short-handed for their upcoming voyage. He immediately demonstrated that he had no fear or hesitation to act on the decks of a ship, whether against storm or privateer, and quickly rose in popularity among the crew. His turning point was during his first boarding, when he covered himself in cookware and insisted on being fired out of the cannon at the target ship. Everybody knew it was useless to argue, so they complied. To their surprise, he survived, was launched directly into the captain's quarter, and quickly apprehended the boarded ship's captain and secured their surrender. From there to first mate, and inevitably inheriting the title of captain after an ill-fated heist left the position open, Captain gained a fearsome reputation for mayhem on the high seas. He traded in his pots and pans for heavy plate and continued to make his cannon-boarding his signature maneuver. As time went on he began demonstrating some sort of innate magical affinity (really the blessing of Sirrion), commanding flames and forging cannons and munitions on the fly in a rapturous battle frenzy. During his career at sea, Captain plundered and sunk several dozen ships, ending with his own when he got a little too carried away while repelling an attempt to commandeer it. Somehow surviving the wreckage and washing ashore, Captain found himself a captain without a crew. But not for very long, he just needs to scrounge up the materials for a new one; maybe a better one that can actually withstand his leadership style.Trivia
- He insists on being referred to as Captain. Captain Bombbeard almost certainly isn't his given name, but nobody thinks it's a good idea to question it.
- He has no natural beard, but he has a habit of gripping lit cannon fuses in his teeth to look more terrifying, hence his given name.
- He isn't actually a devout follower of Sirrion; Sirrion just picked him as a conduit because he really fits the vibe.
- Cole has made a heroforge of Captain Bombbeard, seen here.
