Bel-Zargon
Demographics
Mostly Kaian with some Zaru, especially in the inner city. There are a few Edinu merchants here as well.
Government
The city is run by the prime minister, leaving the royals to national affairs.
Defences
The city is defended by the Iron Guard elite unit, as well as hundreds of knights, footmen, and archers. A wooden palisade protects the outer city. A stone wall surrounds the inner city, and Castle Dardan provides a final layer of protection for the royal family.
Industry & Trade
Situated at the shore of Lake Reed and near the font of the Kaian River and River Reed, Bel-Zargon is a center of trade among the cities of Bastion, Highferry, and Travellers Rest. Though not as cosmopolitan as Crossroads, Bel-Zargon is well-known for its steel, alchemical products, textiles, and other finished goods.
Guilds and Factions
The Order of Reu has a large presence in the city, due to the academy near the castle. A white wizard was counselor to Dardan X, but he was dismissed by Queen Selene who saw herself as counselor enough.
History
Founded in 1190 by Dardan the Great, the city of Bel-Zargon was at first little more than Castle Dardan, a fortress against the native Kaians. Through slaughter and trade, the Zargonese grew in influence among the pastoral Kaians, putting many to work on the manors of the Zaru nobility. Over time, several peasant uprisings were led by the Kaians, but these were finally quashed at the Battle of Travellers Forest. Now the Kaians lick their wounds, though some still long for the old days of rebellion.
Architecture
Much of the outer city is wood and wattle and daub, while the inner city has more stone and granite work.
Geography
Bel-Zargon is a bit hillier and rockier than the southern plain. It lies just south of Lake Reed, on the eastern bank of the River Reed.
