Spellcrafting

Spellcrafting is the art of infusing objects with magic to be used for a specific purpose at a later time. Spellcrafters apprentice under a master to learn their skills.

To become a spellcrafter you need to be born with the Sight, the ability to see magic. Magic in its raw form looks like shimmering gold motes of dust to a spellcrafter, and they can manipulate it into patterns to execute a series of commands, sort of like computer code. But the spell doesn't just float around in the air, it needs to be attached to a physical object to be used. Precious metals and gemstones are infused with the spell, allowing someone without the sight to use the spell.

Gold is the best and most commonly used material for spellcrafted objects. The gold can can be solid, ground into dust and mixed into something, like ink, or spun with threads to be used as embroidery.

Silver doesn't hold magic quite as well as gold, but the metal isn't as soft so it's used for enchanted weapons.

Gemstones can store raw magic to be used later and can be combined with a spellcrafted metal to make enchanted jewelry or boost the power of silver weapons.

Iron is used for blood magic, and the spells come with a physical cost to the wielder.

In the end, all spells in Faerie are a matter of using the naturally available magic with intention, spellcrafting is a way to provide that clear intention, and provide a power source so that the spell isn't limited by the user's natural ability to channel magic and to prevent draining the user's personal energy as a power source.

Dverger Spellcrafting
The Dverger people combine steam technology with spellcrafting in Nidavellir. They favor gemstone power sources that they mine in their mountains, channeled with gold or silver pipes and wires to run their devices.

Even Futhark rune magic is spellcrafting at its heart. The runes need to be tattooed with ink containing gold dust, or engraved onto silver or gold objects to work. The runes simply provide the intention behind the magic.
