Piskie

Piskies are tiny fae with wings like butterflies. Their skin, hair, and wings vary greatly in colour. While you can often find them in castles, as part of the staff, they are mostly found in their own villages and cities which they build in large trees. One of which is the home of Prince Darach, The Piskie City.

In Mythology and Folklore:

A pixie (also called pisky, pixy, pixi, pizkie, piskie, or pigsie in parts of Cornwall and Devon) is a mythical creature of British folklore. Pixies are speculated to be particularly concentrated in the high moorland areas around Devon and Cornwall, suggesting some Celtic origin for the belief and name.

Similar to the Irish and Scottish Aos Sí (also spelled Aos Sidhe), pixies are believed to inhabit ancient underground sites such as stone circles, barrows, dolmens, ringforts, or menhirs. In traditional regional lore, pixies are generally benign, mischievous, short of stature, and childlike; they are fond of dancing and wrestling outdoors, of which they perform through the night.

  • From The Books:

The fianna had visited a village of tiny butterfly-winged piskies—their entire city was built in a giant cedar tree.

But the piskies understood fashion. The little faeries fashioned intricately detailed clothing from flower petals, leaves, grasses, and even insect wings and iridescent beetle shells.

I turned, expecting to see someone my height, but a piskie hovered beside me. She was about the height of my hand, with wings that reminded me of a butterfly’s in blue, purple, and black. Her greenish-blonde hair was pulled back in a severe bun and large round glasses perched on her nose. - The Glass Gate

Estrid peered up at a giant oak tree, its leaves bright green with the first spring growth. But, as huge as the tree was, that's not what captured my attention.

Tiny houses covered the entire tree, some built of twigs and moss, some woven from grasses and hanging from branches. Some were carved into the tree itself with little balconies and miniature gardens of mushrooms, flowering moss, and tiny wildflowers. There were no staircases or ladders, because the piskies didn’t need them.

Tiny faeries, no taller than my hand, flew every which way with wings like butterflies in every color. As beautiful as the city was, the faeries were clearly terrified, scooping their children into houses near the trunk of the tree and arming themselves with tiny swords the size of sewing needles.

“It’s the Huntsman!” shrieked a piskie, and the faeries scattered in fear.

“Wait, we're here to help,” I called.

Most of the faeries disappeared into the tree, but a little man with tiny orange wings, sparkling silver armor, and a crown carved from a gleaming acorn cap landed on a branch near us. - The Frost Gate
