Artificers

As mankind spread across the World, a few among them began to perceive the Great Song at least in part, dimly. Some among them dared to Sing. Each in their own way as to how they perceived the Song. Those that honed their skills enough began to be able to shape parts of the world thru the Melodies they added to the Great Song. The first of these was called Ezra, and later on Ezra the Enchanter or Ezra the Mad. To him was the gift of the shaping of objects that themselves resonated with the Song.
Soon following were Bethany the Singer, who first called forth a new race. Rand the Dancer, who none could face in battle as he walked to the Song’s rhythm. Nathan the Watcher who saw the Fates in the Song’s phrases. Rhianna the Caller, who spun the minds around her.
The last known was simply called the Whisperer. Said to have grown wise listening to the pauses between notes of the Song.
The Artificers with their closeness to the Song knew great life spans. They married and had children. From the children sprang some with portions of their ancestor’s gifts. Now the war of the powers was truly begun and the Artificers sought safety. They gathered together and working together built a great City, a City of Crystal. This, by means of their arts they bound to the clouds themselves. Above, floating, not tied to anyone place, apart from the dangers and desperation of the rest of mankind.
Over the years, the children filled the city and grew into Families of like gifted. Some among them thought to rule the world below, to guide mankind as their gifts lead them. It is Nathan who saw the danger first. He convinced the elder six, that the shining City had not truly left the war behind as it was in the hearts of Man to seek domination. In sorrow the elders decided to bring the City to an end, but the Families would not quietly submit and in the struggle for control the City was destroyed and the First ones with drew from the knowledge of their descendents. Hiding the remains and knowledge of the City with their arts.
But the Families remain, living among the races of Man, and in their hearts domination still lies.
