Sulerian Poppy Species in Tin Star Thaumaturge | World Anvil

Sulerian Poppy

“I’m quite familiar with the substance. Exestryl Ferudine, produced from the Sulerian strain of the poppy plant. It served as one of Mornia’s greatest weapons against the Liang Dynasty. We flooded the entire country with cheap, potent drugs – perfect to capture the rural populace. In a scant few years, entire border garrisons could barely operate. I think if the Venitans hadn’t revolted, the Mageocracy may well have conquered Liang.” - Bertran Alohandril, Canaiberl Alchemist

Basic Information

Anatomy

Mature Sulerian Poppy plants stand nearly three feet tall. They consist of a cluster of fern-like leaves that stay close to the ground. From within the cluster, a single dark green stalk supports a wide, luminescent blue flower. Ferudynal latex can be extracted from the trio of sap nodules that form within the flower. This is a key ingredient in the well-known narcotic drug Exestryl Ferudine.

Growth Rate & Stages

Hardy and requiring little in the way of nutrients, Sulerian Poppies are grown from bulbs that emerge from sap nodules at the end of their life cycle. These bulbs will eventually germinate if they reach the ground, sprouting multiple roots and a single arcane-sensitive stalk. The stalk extracts arcane energy from the surrounding environment. This energy boosts the nutrient extraction capacity of the immature plant, which rapidly begins to grow. From start to finish, it takes between 3 and 6 weeks for a Sulerian Poppy to go from bulb to mature plant.

Ecology and Habitats

The Sulerian Poppy is a native plant of the harsh mountainous regions of Suleria. The plant’s singular success in such a climate is partially due to a miniscule, latent ability to extract arcane energies from its surroundings. As such, certain enterprising individuals have successfully produced poppy crops in the Sierra Rojos mountain range of western Avistat.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Sulerian Poppies can sense arcane energy. They will often direct their open flowers towards the nearest source of such power.
