Moth People

The Lightless People of the Moon

Moth People are one of the humanoid species on the continent of Time. They're essentially small little humans with antennae and giant moth wings on their backs. They live in 'The Land Where the Sun Never Rises' and are instinctually drawn to light.

When Moth People turn 18, their bodies dissolve and are revived in the 'Ritual of Resurrection'. This ritual, performed by the goddess of night and dreams, Selene, occurs every day that one of the Moth People turns 18. In this ritual, they are revived and are officially declared adults. If the ritual is ever delayed, they still come out of the ritual the same as if the ritual was on time.

Moth People under the age of 18 can cut their wings off and be fine, albeit in pain, but if a Moth Person 18 years or older tries to do the same, they will die.

Moth People can fly for long periods of time without landing, but their wings will eventually tire just as a person's legs would get tired after walking or standing for too long.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Moth People appear similar to humans, but they are smaller, have hollow bones, have moth wings that can range anywhere from two times to four times the size of the rest of their body, have antenne, have round eyes, and, in adulthood, have mono-colored eyes.

Biological Traits

Moth people have hollow bones and smaller bodies than humans, making them shorter and lighter. They also have skin patterns that match their respective moth species, since, if the human part of them was omitted, they'd just be really big moths.

Growth Rate & Stages

Moth People generally grow as humans do, but their wings never grow past 1/2 times their body size. When they reach adulthood (18 years old), their wings will generally have a growth spurt, becoming anywhere between 2-4 times their body size in just a year.

Ecology and Habitats

The Moth People generally stay in 'The Land Where the Sun Never Rises', for it has a dark yet stable light level and bioluminescent plants that don't produce enough light to become addicting to look at.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Moth People can eat everything moths and humans can eat. They are, however, generally allergic to cilantro. Why cilantro specifically, no one is really sure about.

Behaviour

Levels of light much higher than the bioluminescent plants in 'The Land Where the Sun Never Rises' tend to attract them in an addicting way. It'll take some force to drag them away from these light sources. They do eventually get used to it, but it can mess their eyes up or, if they touch the light, severely damage their skin. This light addiction if why so many Moth People go blind, especially early on in life.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

The hair of Moth People can be spun into silk. The silk is softest if the Moth Person is a silk moth.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

They almost completely live in 'The Land Where the Sun Never Rises'.

Average Intelligence

Moth People are just as smart as humans.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Moth People can use echolocation. It's very useful, especially since they tend to go blind earlier than most humans, around ages 35-45.

Civilization and Culture

Average Technological Level

Middle/medieval ages level of technology

Major Language Groups and Dialects

They can speak both moth and human languages.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

'Ritual of Resurrection' (see above article for more details.)

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Humans: They have the light, and that's fine, but if they try and bring it, they (the person specifically) will not be welcomed. Humans are generally treated like the rest of the Moth People.

Dragonblood: If any Dragonbloods want to interact with the Moth People, they will be shunned because of actions of Dragonbloods in the past.

Scientific Name
Lepidoptera sapiens
Lifespan
About 85 years
Average Height
3 feet and 6 inches to 4 feet 11 inches for women, and 3 feet 2 inches to 4 feet 5 inches for men.
Average Weight
about 46 pounds for women and 49 pounds for men. Moth People are generally lightweight, even for people with such large wings and such a short stature.
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking

If we look at the real world, Moth People will exist for every species of moth. Their wings look like the wings of the moth, and their skin either resembles the wings or the body of the moth.

Author's Notes

I spent way too much time researching moths while making this species.
