The Illithid Remnants

The Origin of the Illithid is unknown, save for some of the few, scattered carvings of the Stone giants, passed down from a time so long ago that granite has crumbled and worn away. Little is recorded from that era, save for this: Long ago, when the Giants ruled the world beneath the aegis of their gods, a mighty clap of thunder rent the sky and a star plunged from the heavens. From where it landed armies marched, nightmares of flesh and bone and glistening ooze. Behind it came the masters- faces like an infernal octopus, and minds like a torturer's scalpel, the Illithid made the attempt to claim another world as their plaything. However, what they faced was not the scattered and divided nations of so many worlds before, but a united empire of Giants, furious and ready for war.
The Illithid lost. It was never truly a contest in the end, their fleshwarping and psionics unable to stand against the sheer mass, might, and divine favor of the Giants. After one final battle they were driven deep, deep into hiding, taking refuge in the massive system of caverns that spread across most of material plane. To this day they remain there, scheming and searching for a way to retake their rightful conquest.

History

The Illithid travel from world to world by constructing enormous hollow asteroids, launched through the far realms and protected by psionic shields. When they find a mortal plane, they land, conquer, and enslave, setting up new capitals from which to launch their seed ships. This particular group of Illithid was launched from a barren and overcrowded slaveworld, by an ambitious elderbrain. Upon landing however, they were slaughtered and driven back to their ship, unable to face the might of the giants and their gods.In their desperation they developed a method to successfully convert the psi shield mechanism to allow them to phase through the surface of the planet and drop deep through the crust, into a massive cave network now known as the underdark. From there they spread, and even now attempt to worm their tendrils into mortal society.
