  • Other countries comment on the culture and peacefulness of Thalasia
Thalasia, with its steady and sloping hills, golden, green and brown fields of wheat and crops and of course it's ship building centres and docks. Is seen as something of an idyllic and peaceful... if a tad dull... place to live by other countries.   Thalasia have been blessed with a low monster population in it's country and so it has had a safe time to grow and progress, though it's relative distance from any other country in Thysia has forced the people of Thalasia to become comfortable with sea travel and coastal survival so that they can trade with other countries, importing luxuries and finery whilst exporting their crops, fishing yields and brewed alcohols.   As a result of this, though Thalasia inland is a generally peaceful and well governed space, the people of the country are skilled sailors and seamen... some of these individuals make use of the southern islets to become roving pirates.   Thalasia is also noted for two unique races that come from their nation:
  • Storm Elves- Elves who emerged from the tempestuous sea winds to the west and have a natural affinity with engraving enchantments on items and being naturally skilled with coastal based wind spells and magic.
  • Thalasian Halflings- colloquially known as 'Seafarer Halflings', these small folk are acrobatic and skilled navigators and sea wanderers, often highly appreciated and sought after on ships for their ability to survive in the ocean and their natural skill with coastal magic.
Many people leave Thalasia to either take work on board ships or to fulfil their need for adventure and excitement, though many other countries either see Thalasian's as naive or outright offensive in their rose tinted view of the world and their interactions with other people and nations.

Structure

Thalasia is ruled by the republic of Thalasia, handled by elected representatives from each town who pass laws with eachother before taking them to a public vote, this use of a republic was created to stop former boat owners and fisheries dominating the laws and economics of the nation. As a result the republic is used to ensure fairness throughout the country.   However, they have attracted no small amount of criticism for their tax system in which every citizen of Thalasia must, once a year, return to Thalasia and contribute 10% of their income that year to the upkeep of the nation.

Culture

The Thalasian culture can be best described as Hobbiton's mixture of family values, gentle xenophobia and lots of naivety. They have a simple culture and straight forward values as well as a reverence for nature and the sea... with most Thalasian's feeling most at home on the water and often they can be overwhelmed and slightly confused by the 'culture, pomp and absurdity' of the other nations which they find intimidating.    This also stems from the Thalasian government seeking to be amiable allies with every nation in Thysia to make sure they do not jeopardize trade or risk war with other nations. Though it has given the perception that Thalasian's are a weak willed people when push comes to shove.
