Bendis, God of Life

Bendis was the first born of Xassalt's three sons. At the moment of his birth, Xassalt knew Bendis to be the god of life because everything has a beginning. Bendis along with his parent, brothers, and the elemental lords helped to create Thyr. It was Bendis who believed that Thyr should be populated with its many creatures. Bendis is also known to be the father of the Human Race.   Seeing that the older races, elves and dwarves, were so long lived and that his brother Ormus had little to do to keep himself occupied, Bendis created the human race. They were intended to be populous and short lived, thus giving Ormus plenty of souls to judge.   Bendis is unbiased about the fate of his creations, like life itself, Bendis is not prone to mercy. Bendis shows favor to neither the just nor the wicked; everyone is treated with the same indifference. Once they are given life, they cease to be his concern, except in the case of undead, which Bendis finds abhorrent. He views undead as an abomination and corruption of his holy work and the natural order of things. Few things move this passive deity to anger swifter than undead.   Religion and Dogma: Bendis has a substantial following in Thyr. Newly born children are brought to his temples to receive his blessing and to give thanks for the new life. Frequently, this is when the child is given his or her name.   Clerics of Bendis are pragmatic in nature. Bendyte clerics see life in much the same way as their god: Life is simply life. It is only as long as the other brothers allow and no interference can change that. They believe strongly, however, that life is a holy gift that should be respected and cherished.   The vestment of a Bendyte cleric are simple white linen robes, which call to mind the swaddling wrappings of a newly born infant. His holy symbol is the image of an hourglass with the sand, white in color, entirely at the top depicted on a gold background.     Appearance: Regardless of race, region, or ethnic group, Bendis always appears as male in his early adulthood with a thick mane of chin length hair as black as the chaos that surrounded his birth. As with most gods in Thyr, the rest of Bendis' attributes vary according to whom he appears.
