Synopsis:
With the recent acquisition of a working cargo ship, Pappy is inspired to involve Aberystwyth in a coastal trading route, both as a means for importing supplies and as a way for people to move to here by sea. There's just one problem; no one in town knows how to operate and manage a cargo ship! Luckily, Pappy knows just the person for the job, a good hearted, no-nonsense ship captain named Azriel, who Pappy once shared many oceanic adventures with. However, Azriel is currently in prison for defending innocent civilians from corrupt guards. The job is to break him out of his coastal prison cell at Shacklebolt Point! And because Azriel is a good man at heart, no employee at the prison is to be killed during the mission; after all, they're just normal people doing their jobs, and Azriel wouldn't likely join a bunch of cutthroats trying to break him out.
Our adventurers travel by sea in a small rowboat, pushed along the coast by their new crabfolk friend "Krrkrrgrrk" (Pappy has been allowed to call him "Cookie"), and makes quick work of the trip. After arriving to the cliff wall directly beneath Shacklebolt Point, the heroes scale the rocky wall, then locate, unlock, and enter the sewer pipe that leads into the prison. They follow the large pipe, leading to the warden's private bathroom, and they stealthily climb out to inspect the empty bathroom and bedroom of the warden, and then discover the dwarf warden quietly doing paperwork at his desk in the office. After a few attempts at being sneaky, the group eventually resorts to bludgeoning the warden in the head repeatedly with blunt objects until he's rendered unconscious. While Dwayne wraps the warden up like a mummy, the other heroes scour the room for anything useful, and unlock a desk full of all sorts of contraband, including a disguise kit and pepper dust. While the group works at disguising Dwayne as the warden using the disguise kit and the warden's uniform, the elderly secretary of the prison calls to the warden through the closed door, slipping paperwork under the door for him (including information regarding Azriel), and reminds him that she is almost finished polishing his keys, and he can pick them up at the front desk in a few minutes. The team takes advantage of the opportunity, and decides to have one party member act as a new prisoner being led by the warden into the jail cell, while the stealthier members keep watch and support from the shadows.
The plan goes quite smoothly; the "warden" leads the "new prisoner" right up to the front desk, where Dwayne receives the ring of keys from the kindly old secretary, who seems to have lost her glasses and can't see very well without them. Alaster stays behind to keep her distracted, while the rest of the party enters the main prison hall by bluffing the guard on watch; Dwayne demands that the guard do laps around the prison for his insubordination, and the guard begrudgingly complies. The party locates Azriel's jail cell, is surprised to find him sharing his cell with another prisoner, a human named Horace Tibbs. Opening the cell, Azriel and Horace join the party, and are discovered escaping by a sinister prisoner a few cells down, blackmailing the party into releasing him also, lest he shouts and gives them away to the guards playing cards in the next room. The party agrees to release him, and they work their way back to the front desk, but are questioned by a guard who left the card game for some snacks. Unconvinced of the party's story, the suspicious guard clocks Dwayne on the head with his guard's baton, destroying the disguise, and confirming his suspicions. The jig is up; he rouses the other guards, and the party flees from them, while setting up obstacles for the guards in flight, such as greasing the floor and pluming clouds of pepper dust into the air for the guards to choke on. All their traps are effective, and slow down the guards enough to give the party a healthy lead. During the pursuit, it's clear that Horace is a friend of Azriel and wants him to escape with them, but not the sinister prisoner; before leaving the front desk area, Azriel blinds the prisoner with a blast of brilliant light from his hand and leaves him on the floor clutching his eyes. From there, the party retraces their steps back to the warden's bathroom, dive down the poop chute, slide out into the water, and together escape again by boat.
