Dwarf

Also known as the Mountain Folk, this race is as ancient and dauntless as the mountains they call home, emerging alongside the elves as one of the first races.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Dwarves are generally described as short, stockily-built humanoids with broad muscular frames, while females possess slightly smaller buxomly frames.

Genetics and Reproduction

Like many of the mortal races, dwarves reproduce sexually through the coupling of reproductive organs with their gestation period lasting around eleven months.

Growth Rate & Stages

Dwarves mature a lot slower compared to the other races, reaching adulthood at the age of 30 (it is also around this time that many females are married off).

Dietary Needs and Habits

Dwarves mostly consume a wide variety of meat and root vegetables (such as potatoes and turnips) and are also known to distill a variety of ales and spirits.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Dwarven society is built around clanship, with each clan established through ancient bloodlines (or in some rare instances through political allegiances), they are also led by a ruler known as a thane, who is chosen through elective primogeniture.

Facial characteristics

One of the most notable physical characteristics among dwarves is their long beards, which is common among male dwarves which they will grow for much of their lifespan, while females are incapable of growing any facial hair.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Dwarven names are said to be as short and robust as they are, with their surnames often being patronymic or used to denote their clan membership. (e.g: -son for boys, -dori for girls)

Gender Ideals

Due to their low birth rates (with only two out of five children born as female), women are traditionally relegated to non-combative roles within their society, despite this, they are highly respected by their communities.

Average Technological Level

Dwarves are highly renowned as masters of the anvil, forging various inventions implemented into the civilized world, such as the bolt thrower, the catapult, the crossbow, and the usage of blackpowder explosives.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Dwarves traditionally speak their own language, known to them as Dvarek, but due to trade with the outside world, they are also known to speak the Common Tongue.

Common Dress Code

Dwarves typically wear simple utilitarian clothing designed more for comfort than fashion, with specific colors used to denote clan membership.

Common Taboos

Shaving a beard is seen as an unforgivable offense within dwarven society, with those whose beards were forcibly scalped/shaven seen as pariahs (akin to being tarred and feathered).

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Dwarves are notoriously known to be stubborn, uncouth, and often prone to holding grudges that can last for generations; but at the same time, they are said to have a strong sense of honor and are said to be stalwart allies when their friendship is gained.
