Sellenian
Sellenian is the term used to describe the diverse culture and ethnicity of the vast Empire of Sellenia. The term encompasses a population of more than 20 million souls of all races and backgrounds, from the Ulan Emperor himself to the lowliest slave. The majority of Sellenians are dark-skinned Humans that describe themselves as ebanos, which is a Sellenian word for "dark". It is thought the people with this dark brown skin tone and jet-black, silky hair originate on the continent near the southern extreme of its extent (the equatorial regions).
The Empire of Sellenia spans an area of the southern Eastern Sea that covers more than a million square miles of the sea and tens of thousands of square miles of the mainland. This vast area of control means the population of the Empire is a varied and diverse as the lands it rules. Light-skinned Humans, Halflings, Dwarves, Gnomes, and even Elves can be found in and amongst the local ebanos, both as free subjects of the Empire and as slaves.
Society in the Empire is based on the institution of slavery. As many as a million slaves are currently owned and utilized in the Empire, and tens of thousands are kept on the large island of Sellenia itself.
Culture
Major language groups and dialects
Sellenian is the most common tongue spoken in the Empire and is the official language of the government, but all languages can be found spoken in the busy ports and major cities of the Empire. Ports that see large numbers of foreign shipping are particularly cosmopolitan in their language make up, with tongues like Arian, Caldarian, and Thallian just as likely to be heard as Sellenian.
