Rian
In the Thallian culture, regional leaders are called Rian. The Thallian language uses "ri" to denote a king, chief or leader, and Rian denotes "King of the Land". Other related terms are Ribann ("family leader"), Ri Thuath ("king of tribe"), or Ard Ri ("king of kings"). To eliminate some of the confusion, most visitors and many locals simply use the term King.
In most cases, these kingdoms follow the right of primogeniture but this is not a hard rule in the culture. Some kingdoms still "elect" their monarch from members of the ruling elite, while other kingdoms allow kings or monarchs to be challenged in their rule by a trial by combat, in which the winner of the combat will rule the kingdom, and the loser will be dead.
