Brother Domnal

Brother Domnal

Brother Domnal is a priest of the Maranonic Faith that is currently wandering along the Colian border with the High Kingdom of Imesse. He is a dedicated and passionate member of the Maranist Order, a community of mendicant priests and monks that have dedicated themselves to the protection of the faithful from harassments and attacks from the High Kingdom, specifically from the Duchy of Hekmo.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Domnal is a tall and very strong man. He follows a rigid and rigorous regimen of exercises and patterned movements that he refers to as "forms" that have, over the last 20 years, made his body capable of amazing feats of strength, fluid motion and endurance.

Identifying Characteristics

As a dedicated follower of the Maranist priesthood, Domnal keeps his head and face clean shaven as often as he can. In fact, the only edged tool Domnal owns is a small razor-sharp, single-edged knife that he wears on his woven cincture (a cloth belt that holds his robes closed), and it is this small knife that he eats and shaves with every day.

Apparel & Accessories

Domnal wears the prescribed traditional robes of the Maranist priesthood: red, orange or yellow to represent the fire of Maranon's love for his creation.

Specialized Equipment

Domnal, like all the Maranist priests, does not use or carry edged weapons. He does carry a stout and carefully crafted hickory staff, however, and he (like all Maranists) can use that staff to deadly effect when necessary.

The only other equipment that Domnal utilizes that is rather unique are a pair of fingerless gloves made from the tanned skins of a Leviathan, which provide him with an excellent means of protecting his hands from injury due to hard work, or hard blows. These gloves were gifted to him by a family of fishermen near the mouth of the Dorn River that he saved from a raid by Imessian brigands two years ago.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Domnal has been a devoted follower of Maranon for at least 30 years. His earliest memory is of being dragged out of a dark house by huge armored men who threw him into a wagon filled with other children. He recalls looking through the slats of the wagon's sides and seeing the bodies of his parents and neighbors scattered all through his village. Just as the wagon was being locked and readied for travel, a tall, broad figure with a long white beard wearing a hooded cloak swept out of the night and killed the men that had captured him. The strange figure moved silently and with deadly speed, and in just moments all the armored men were as dead as Domnal's family and friends. Without a word, the stranger unlocked the wagon and released the children, and then disappeared into the night. Domnal is utterly convinced that he was saved by Maranon himself that night, and he has dedicated himself to the god's worship ever since.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Domnal is an accomplished master of both hand-to-hand combat and the art of staff fighting. He is also very well versed in the means by which poor and ill-equipped people can design and build efficient and (very) effective means of defense in, on or around their homes, farms and villages. From effective walls made from available materials to traps, hazards and hides that can take away a great deal of an attacker's advantage in a fight.

Morality & Philosophy

Domnal is particularly passionate about the need to assist and protect the people living near the border between Colo and Imesse. For the last 25 years, raids and attacks by Imessian ruffians and brigands have cost the lives and livelihoods of hundreds of innocent farmers, herders and workers. He, along with his fellow Maranists, wander along the border regions of Colo and offer assistance, support, information and (whenever necessary) physical defense in the form of hand-to-hand and staff fighting skills.

Social

Contacts & Relations

For more than a year, Domnal has traveled the Colian borders with Brother Fynn. They have developed an excellent relationship and both feel they have accomplished much in making everyone they have encountered safer and more secure.

Speech

Domnal is gifted with a fine, loud and clear voice that easily projects even in difficult outdoor conditions. He uses this voice to preach to the people about the love and concern that Maranon has for each of them, and how the Song of Life teaches them that protecting their family and neighbors from harm and danger is not only acceptable, but is divinely required by the god himself of all his created beings.
