The Severance

Era beginning/end

0DO

A great trans-dimensional war fought for the future of reality.

Prior to The Severance, mortals learned and wielded the raw primal forces of the gods, learning spells and magics that they could neither fully control nor understand. These primal forces were dangerous and unpredictable, and they looked upon it with awe. These infant arcanists had no understanding of what they were dealing with or what they were doing. Many of them suffered mysterious ailments and perished from contact with "spirits." In hopes of avoiding a terrible fate whilst gaining a great power, these ancestral spellcasters entreated the "spirits" for aid.   In some lands, the spirits that responded were Great Chromatic Drakes, who expected gifts and worship in exchange for knowledge. In other lands, beings from "elsewhere"; Demons and the three Dark Primarchs answered these calls, granting the mortals knowledge to summon more of their kin with promises of the powers to fell gods.   As the decades advanced, these draconic and demonic cults grew in number and strength; followers indeed learning to control the powers they sought. This would have been no concern had the old gods, The Sanctity of the Nine, not been fully enraptured by their creations, domains, and worshipers. These gods, so enveloped in their own hubris did not see the brewing storm on the horizon.   Like a thief in the night, the old gods' enemies struck. None are sure who struck first, the drakes or the demons, but the impact was felt. And thus was waged a war that would reshape the landscape of Thoroth; politically, culturally, and geographically.   Many debate on which side won the battle. Some say the old gods were victorious, swearing never to be caught up in their works again, thus severing their physical connection between themselves and the plane of Thoroth. Others believe the dragons won, aided by their metallic kin and thus bringing balance to their reign over mortals. Still more claim that the mortals were victorious; many of them ascending to godhood themselves in the process and allowing their force to drive back and subdue their former masters. Others believe that all lost the conflict and that the gods are no more.   None debate that The Severance occurred, however. The mark of this grand struggle is left on the face of Thoroth forever in the unnatural circular Cataclysm Wreath mountain range, surrounding the lone peak of Heaven's Reach; the holiest of holy lands.
