Hira'razhir

Hira'razhir are a winged race whose skeletons are formed of hollow bones. They live almost exclusively at high altitudes. They consider the air to be their true element, and they prefer to spend most of their lives gliding with the winds. Deep in their heart of hearts, they scorn the use of their mountain eyries for anything other than minimal use.   None know the origin of the Hira'razhir. Many believe them to be the mortal offspring of the union between a human and an angel. Others believe them to be descendant of angels that were cast out for betraying the gods. Almost exclusively, Hira'razhir are met with looks of awe and wonder from passersby.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Hira'razhir are gaunt and rather short, and they do not look terribly imposing until they spread their wings. Their wings, in fact, measure longer than their body when measured tip to tip. To support their wingspan, their sholders and upper back are incorporated into the wing structure.

Additional Information

Facial characteristics

They have blue or grey eyes and silver or white hair.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Hira'razhir often name their offspring with one singular name. This name tends to have an airy pronunciation; in fact, many Hira'razhir sometimes believe they can hear the winds saying their name as they soar above the world.   Example names include: Lorrel, Ime, Tebreh, Aurruna, etc.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Because they love flight above all other things, Hira'razhir are very protective of their wings. They keep them folded back in a flattened configuration to protect them from harm when they are not airborne, and they are constantly watchful lest harm come to them. Needless to say, they do not appreciate anyone touching their wings out of curiosity. In fact, a crippling injury to the wings is such a terrible psychological blow that a Hira'razhir who is so maimed will often commit ritual suicide. The same is true of those who lose use of their wings to disease or the infirmities of age. New-borns with deformed wings are put to death to spare them the misery of life as a less than whole Hira'razhir.

Common Myths and Legends

In the Champions of Old religious belief system, one member of this pantheon used to be a mortal Hira'razhir before ascending to godhood. Sareash, Smith of the Sky, is said to have forged the Sun to separate night and day after the original was destroyed during The Severance. Of the Champions, Sareash is said to be the most noble and honorable, and is the patron of many mortals who seek to uphold a lawful code and protect the light from all darkness.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Hira'razhir bear no unusual animosity toward any particular race. The are, however, inordinately proud of their ability to fly. They know full well that flying distinguishes them from most other intelligent races, and it is hard for them to restrain themselves from looking down (both figuratively and literally) at earthbound races.
