As a race, Dwarves have a universal reputation for ruggedness, practicality, unwavering loyalty - and stubbornness. They are intensely clannish (especially those from Egra) and stand up for their fellow Dwarves regardless of circumstance and come what may. Most Dwarves live among rocky highlands and mountain caverns, where they mine Thoroth for its riches. They love precious metals and gems, but also recognize the value of common industrial metals. While most Dwarves are found in caverns and mines, many can be found in other societies above ground as smiths and artificers. They are superior craftsmen, and the keenness and strength of their weapons, as well as the beauty and power of their artifacts, are the stuff of legends.
Basic Information
Both male and female Dwarves have stocky bodies with exceptionally strong limbs.
Dwarves have an unusually high ratio (2 to 1) of males to females. As a consequence, their rate of reproduction is unusually low. Dwarven women are rarely seen in public.
Additional Information
Dwarves see well in extreme darkness. In the dimmest light, they can see perfectly well 50', and fairly well up to 100'. They can see 10' in total darkness (non-magical).
Dwarves also have truly exceptional stamina, able to swing a pick all day without tiring.
Civilization and Culture
Dwarves traditionally name their offspring with monosyllabic or disyllabic words utilizing sharp consonants, often including D, B, and K sounds in them. Female names always end with an S, although this is not exclusive to female dwarven names.
Examples include: Dwafir, Bali, Temruk, Keks, Gemak, Bafas, etc.
Male Dwarves keep long beards, sometimes braided, and all Dwarves keep long hair that is also often braided.
Dwarves are monagamous, although only a third of the race is female, leaving half of all male Dwarves without a spouse.
Dwarvish, a guarded tongue that is shared with no other races.
Dwarves tend to war heavy garbs with colorful hooded cloaks.
Dwarves revere their ancestors above all else, except for any deities they may follow. They also believe that each Dwarven bloodline has a common spirit that permeates each member of it, binding all of them together in spiritual union. These beliefs come together in the notion that each Dwarven king inherits a tangible spiritual essence from each of his predecessors, linking him to them and vice-versa.
Dwarves fear open water due to their natural ability to sink like a stone.
Dwarves enter into agreements with extreme care and honor them to the letter.
Dwarves have a general dislike for Orcs (likely due to the related Lugroki they encounter in the depths of their mines) and hatred for Dragons, both implacable foes for uncounted generations. In fact, Dwarves instinctively dislike all of the underground races that worship dark gods and revel in cruelty and destruction.
They are also suspicious of fey and Elves of all brand, a distrust that has more to do with the strangeness of Sylvan culture than anything else.
Other than this, Dwarves tend to treat all non-Dwarves respectfully and as lesser-beings.
