Zikrat
The zikrats were an aquatic species of the planet Rarebb, of the Tralakas system, owned by the Zikrat Scientific Citizenry (ZSC).
The zikrat were almost not capable of walking on land, instead thriving underwater. They rapidly developed their civilization underwater, where structures would decay significantly faster. As such, their materials had to be excellently strong and very waterproof, or maintainers had to maintain all the structures constantly.
Their species has a number of strong fins as well as arms for manipulation. The particularly strong fins allowed them to walk on land, albeit very slowly, and they needed to be wet constantly, else they risk drying up and dying. In later stages of technology, they developed bags that they could wear that would keep them wet and clean on land, allowing them to build structures on land more easily.
The zikrats reproduce in a somewhat similar way as humans. After birth, it will take them about 30 years to grow to full size and roughly 17 years to become fertile and gain the ability to reproduce. However, they also live for much longer than humans and a zikrat usually dies at around 200 years of age. As such, many generations can occur at the same time. The long lived nature of this species eventually turned out to be vital to their continued existence after the Calamity.
This species has a somewhat slow metabolism allowing them to live longer and on slightly less food, and their brains use about half of the energy of the rest of the body. Respiration was performed via a number of large gills on their body which could not absorb air, but could store an amount of water for land travel. This allowed them to spend an amount of time on land and out of water.
The biological zikrat species is now extinct because of the Calamity which prevented them from reproducing but they lived on as robots, having uploaded their minds into large repositories and then into sentient robots. In modern times, these robots are what carry the title of zikrat, and the biological zikrats are now called ancient zikrats. These robots are often custom built for the individuals using them, so they can vary quite significantly. Although the robots have a mostly male psychology because no females were uploaded, they still have their own cultures which can differ. The robots gave themselves the ability to reproduce by building new AI cores and turning them on to create a new identity and person. As such, they have formed families together.
