Dwarves

The Dwarves proud and sturdy had always kept to their clans, and like all creature of intelligence when the clan got too large or when there rose upstarts with ambitions greater then their contained communities groups would split off and travel to colonize a new home for themselves and creating new clans. Though they kept a strong bond of common ancestry with each other they would often bicker with the other clans, it rarely ever escalated to bloodshed between dwarves they were quick to kill anything that might hurt one of their kin that wasn't a dwarf.   After centuries of mostly avoiding the surface world teeming with monsters and unsavory savages one clan of Dwarves would leave the relatively safe underground and would venture on an expedition to the surface to explore the great wide world above, these were the Dwarves of clan Magmausse (Dwarven for magma) became the Dwarves of Clan Everlight. Originally their name was meant to be the Everfight but when they discovered the location that was to be their home they were inspired and adopted the light. The light from which their name came was a strange product of unknown origins, when the Dwarves of Everfight who anticipated endless glorious battle on the surface burrowed their way out they were hit with blinding light so powerful that the first woman who had cracked the final stones went blind for a month. They knew of the sun from the very few scouts that were curious about the surface but the sunlight had never been described as something so very bright as to blind a dwarf who witnessed it indirectly. The Dwarves now with caution continued their mining until they reached a cavern much larger than most pockets deep underground, the cavern was lined with what seemed to be crystalline material that was tougher than anything skilled crafts Dwarves had ever witnessed, exploring these strange crystals exposed a few passages leading out of the cavern and even leading out to the surface not far beyond, from the surface peaked a few of these crystal protrusions that shone Dazzlingly in the daylight and beautifully even at night.   During their stay in the Cavern the Dwarves set a base camp for their outer world expeditions, but what they witnessed caused them to make it their home. On one end of the cavern was what appeared to be a black crystal similar to the other more milky white material that was all about them, and this was in the shape of a bowl under a hovering white crystal with a gap in between as tall as a house even the bowl itself was as large as a small pond, they discovered one fascinating thing when a lazy dwarf snuck into the strange black bowl and fell asleep one night during a watch in the middle of said bowl by the time someone else came to check on them in the morning all they found was a puddle of molten metals from their equipment, they discovered that the crystals seemed to amplify the heat of the sun and anything placed within the bowl would be melted and purified, the black material below it seemed to absorb the heat, upon seeing this the Dwarves knew, they had found the worlds most natural forge and felt destined to use it. With their Light forge they created wonderful weapons and armors to combat the malevolent forces above land, though the Dwarves were far enough from the Draconian front line they aided their allies with troops and arms, constant battle caused by ages of toil and conflict limited the Dwarves visions of their future above land and below as monsters were a constant threat. Now from their home the Shining Peaks they deliver world renowned goods from their Lightforge and show a great pride in being the top supplier of arms and armors to the adventurers of the City of Awe.
Though there were many attempts to experiment on and discover the secrets to this crystalline material no dwarf had ever found a way to extract any, even when colluding with the elves whom had by chance made contact with them nobody was able to do anything with these strange crystalline materials, that is until one Dwarf quite by accident managed to break off a few pieces of each crystal, two shards one of light and dark. This Dwarf was an old widower, recently mourning the loss of his wife and children he decided to end his life in glorious battle surprising everyone as he was far from the warrior type.
Leaving the Shinning Peaks through hidden tunnels he sought to encounter some beasts to end his sorrow. His name was Orville , or grandpa to most of the other Dwarves. Orville had lived a pious life, worshiping the light and their ancestors he was a run of the mill worker. When he finally came face to face with his first monsters he learned the worst fear of all; his own mortality. As his equipment was torn from him left helpless and alone before savage monsters he had a revelation, that this is what the entire worlds peoples were facing and fighting unable to do anything but cower before a tide of monstrous enemies, praying to his Ancestors and gods he was thrown through a tunnel wall into a secluded chamber in which sat two pieces of crystal. One was light and milky and stood in the center of the chamber against a large black piece of flat, Reflective and large. Old Orville prayed one final time and grasped at these "Arms" and with a single heave they relented the "Blade" sliced his gauntlets and the shield seemed impossibly heavy, and it was with these two pieces of equipment that old Orville swore to fight for all those that were scared and alone, Grandpa Orville lived just long enough to discover the source of the worlds Sorrows; the Abyss. Orville's body itself had been preserved through the Realms' efforts to create the city of Awe and became the first person buried in its graveyard the city also had a statue erected before one of the four entrances to the Abyss, what happened to his equipment is unsure, rumors say that the Dwarves of the Everlight returned them to the Shining Peaks to immortalize forever, others say the Dwarves wanted to discover how to create more of these powerful arms, and yet these "Arms" have never been seen again by any eye witnesses, anyone who claims any knowledge has only heard rumors much like everyone else.
