Public Gymnasium

OVERVIEW

Much of the training and preparation of athletes in Meletis is done in this building. The complex includes the fields to the north of the building where athletes train outdoors on the grass and even go into the forest in impromptu competitions and betting. The entrance is guarded by an effigy of Heliod as the god of physical vigor, and another of Iroas himself.   The building has a palestra, exercise tools, massage rooms and baths. Access is usually granted at the age of 15 years after a symbolic payment and usually accompanied by a trainer, but no one is forbidden to enter after that age. Major athletes always enter free of charge and in fact their sponsors are usually the main sponsors of the facilities as well. The main courtyard surrounds a pool of considerable depth where young swimmers train.   The great rivalries between athletes usually begin here between peers or groups of youngsters competing in the gymnasium, encouraged by their coaches and condemned by the priests. Rumors and stories of all kinds are turned into poems sung by the aedos, sometimes idealizing simple fights between kids as great epic deeds.

Location Description

Outside

The building is situated with vast fields to its north, where athletes can be seen vigorously training on the grass or disappearing into the forest for spontaneous competitions. The entrance of the gymnasium is flanked by imposing effigies: one of Heliod, symbolizing physical vigor, and another of Iroas, embodying the spirit of competition. The sturdy architecture of the gymnasium, with its open spaces and robust design, speaks of strength and discipline.

Inside

Crossing the threshold of the Public Gymnasium, you find yourself in a world dedicated to physical excellence and sporting prowess. The palestra is abuzz with activity, with athletes engaging in various exercises, their movements a blend of grace and power. The gymnasium is well-equipped with exercise tools, massage rooms, and baths, catering to the needs of the athletes in their rigorous training routines. The heart of the complex is the main courtyard, featuring a deep pool where young swimmers hone their skills under watchful eyes. The gymnasium is not just a training ground but a social hub, where rivalries are born and fostered among the young athletes, often under the guidance and encouragement of their coaches. These rivalries and tales of athletic feats are immortalized in poems by the aedos, turning even simple skirmishes into epic narratives.
