The Reverent Army of Meletis

The hoplites of Meletis practice battlefield tactics in an environment saturated with religious devotion. The military force of the polis is called the Reverent Army and aims as much to exalt the glory of the pantheon as to defend Meletis. The soldiers are clever and resourceful, believing their piety leads the gods to smile upon them. More likely, though, their extensive training in battlefield tactics and magic gives them an edge over other soldiers, with most Meletian hoplites knowing at least a little magic.   Meletian hoplites use a combination of cunning, faith, and magic to defend their coastal home. Most of these skilled soldiers serve in the Reverent Army, the defenders of Meletis, which uses an array of proven strategies and flexible troop formations to gain the advantage over foes. Bolstered by trained griffon and pegasus steeds, they strike foes where they least expect.   Meletian Hoplite Stat Block

Composition

Manpower

In total on land and at sea, the Reverent Army numbers around 13,000. In the Listes base you'll find about 200, and in the heart of the polis as guards and attendants to the Twelve you'll find about 7,000 with the rest traveling the seas and working throughout the smaller holdings and at the borders.

Equipment

There are swords and armor, spears, and short bows for all the hoplites and the generals to use at any base they're stationed at. The border patrol and the troops in Listes also have access to siege weaponry and a commanding fortress that protects the inhabitants. There is food and supplies regularly sent to all the bases and outposts as well as medical supplies and updates from the polis.

Weaponry

The soldiers of the outposts and Listes base often use swords and bows. There is siege weaponry- catapults and rams- available as well. They are also very good with magic.

Vehicles

When riding into battle the forces often use trained horses and chariots. When traveling long distances you'll see wagons, foot soldiers, and naval vessels. Special infantry is able to command forces on griffin and pegasus-back.

Training

When you turn 16 you can enter the army and many spend the years leading up to this training in battle, tactics, and spell work. When you enter as a hoplite trainee, you are taught to use the quintessential spells of the Meletian army and further refine their fighting skills. As you progress through your training to become ready for higher ranks should a position open up, you learn to use more difficult, more deadly weapons, and the greater aspects of being fluid on the battlefield and when planning a siege.

History

Though the polis has been attacked by beast and man alike, the force of the army has kept the polis standing strong for centuries. While the Akroan army believes they could take them in a fight, the truth is the Akroan army doesn't have the number the Meletian army does and it probably keeps the peace between the polies.

Historical loyalties

The Reverent Army has always served the Twelve of Meletis and the higher laws of Justice through Iroas.
