Denizens of the Underground

Beneath Port Adaris, within the crumbling bones of structures long-forgotten, lies the entrance to the Providence Underground. Known in its existence yet unknown in the entirety of its location, the Underground exists for those who find solace in the darkness that lingers below the bright city streets and far from the sunny ocean breezes of the bustling Daytimer towns. Creatures of night, whose souls are tied to the moons and stars, seek shelter in these hollow spaces well beneath the feet of unaware Therans. Many of these creatures are reluctant to exit; some fear the toxic touch of the sun's rays, other the often stifling heat found on the continent proper. Most fear the common populace which makes its home in the topside cities.   These nighttime beings have been cast from genteel society. Too mysterious, too dangerous. Too much effort for the Daytimers to seek greater understanding. A shame, for the sleeping power of night carries  with it a different weight than its waking brethren, and the Shadowed Kin who dwell in the tunnel mazes dug from eons past hold much of that power.   Catacombs, crumbling tunnels, dried sewer systems - these are the homes of the disinherited: vampires and weres, ghosts and ghouls, m'ories and moonshades. Generations of fables and folktales have driven the commoner to fear these neighbors, even those who would never dare to draw near the common folk, let alone harm them. But as the waking world has expanded and their imaginations have grown, so have the slumbering spirits been pushed further away, further down. Further out of the pleasantly sunny thoughts of most denizens of the Upperground.    The topsiders' ignorance is their bliss, and it may yet become their downfall, for the Underground grows restless. Its leaders desire to return home to the natural shadows: the rippling depths of the waters and whispering corners of the forests. Recently, rumors circulate of topside darklings maintaining strongholds in the few regions which remain untouched. Perhaps it is time for the spirits in hiding to rise and aid their fellows...
