Primordial Souls

What are primordial souls?

The first souls ever unleashed on Theoma were the primordial souls. Having very weak necromantic cores, the land gods found them unusually easy to Fate-weave with. This 'easy mode' investment was considered essential for the early shaping of cities and settlements across Theoma. The downside is that the primordial souls lack initiative, learn slowly, and are prone to doing the same thing uncomplainingly for ridiculously long periods of time. They just don't think like other people. For this reason, the land gods mostly moved on from working with primordial souls. No power can stop the land gods from bringing about the reincarnation of primordial souls if they want to, but the land gods (though they think and act over very long periods of time) are not quite immune to boredom.

When the primordial souls were young, they varied in quality quite a lot, but the ones with hazardous patterns were greatly weakened over time as they acted on hazardous patterns again and again over time. The old primordials that still exist are preserved by being unaging like everyone else in Theoma, and after thousands of years, they're living treasures with good, basic natures. Old primordials in basic jobs are sometimes very much protected by their communities and local governments.

What are the consequences of weak necromantic cores?

Being poor at necromancy is only the most obvious, unsubtle consequence. The whole nature of the primordials speaks to the hazards of a weak necromantic core. Their lack of self-direction, slower learning, and their tendency to fall into a rut and keep going... ALL of it is a consequence of a weak necromantic core. This is why the land gods gift so many people with strong necromantic cores, despite their opposition to necromancy.

Primordial souls are like Gnarlen in terms of their necromantic potential. Their weak necromantic cores generally prevent them from studying necromancy, so the first societies needed very little anti-necromantic force to keep them from developing beyond Gnarlen. Despite this, the Gnarlen WERE invented by the primordials themselves, and so to subsequent generations have 'always' been part of Theoma.
