Vincent Hurand

Vincent is one of the main characters of Map of the Woods. He is Jack Hurand's human equal, and his title is The Storyteller. Unlike the other kids, Vincent also gives himself minor titles from time to time.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

A bit athletic with good speed, but doesn't enjoy sports. Form is often obscured by large clothing. Like his brother, Vincent has vitiligo.

Special abilities

Vincent's magic and sigils are based on illusions, and are classified as boost magic. Though Vincent utilizes magic for himself, he doesn't show the full extent of his abilities to others unless he is very comfortable with them. Some of his skills include illusions that alter his appearance or the appearance of an object, creating light sources, or moving around small objects. He's surprisingly shy about his talent.

Apparel & Accessories

Vincent enjoys wearing casual and oversized clothing. Most of his clothes are from his mother or even his father, with only a few items fitting 'well'. He often wears overalls, a large sweater or jacket, and dirty tennis shoes.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Vincent was born alongside his equivalent, Jack. Like many children, they got along well as brothers, and spent much of their time together. Jack was nicknamed 'Jove' as in 'Joven', meaning young, in order for their parents to distinguish the two, as they liked to swap names as a part of a game.   As Vincent and Jove got older, they grew apart in their interests and friend groups. Vincent, the seemingly more extroverted of the two, found it hard to make friends in school, and his brother, introverted, focused more on academic accomplishments. While the two definitely didn't hate each other, they didn't talk or play for some time. Both dived into magic on their own; Jove sought magic as a valuable and helpful skill, such as in the garden or on walks, and Vincent used it as a way to get rid of his loneliness. Vincent's magic skills deal with creating illusions and moving around objects, and he often uses this to envision his stories.   To Vincent's relief, the two became closer once more around middle school. They bonded over magic abilities and storytelling, with Vincent narrating and Jove giving suggestions. Vincent enjoyed reliving their past enjoyment, usually playing tricks or games with his brother. Jove, meanwhile, enjoyed Vincent's energy but hoped he'd follow through with the ideas he proposed.   Around this time, Vincent's relationship with his parents became rocky, as he was ignoring school work to talk to himself or assemble intricate story designs. Jove offered to help him with work, and that helped somewhat, but Vincent hated feeling trapped by the rising amounts of studying. His main relief with his parents was cooking with his mother.   Eventually, Vincent and Jove took over cooking when their mother fell ill. Their father, meanwhile, worked away from home most days, and didn't interact with his kids much in order to hide his stress. Jove and Vincent went to their mother's funeral in silence, and their father came late because of work. Vincent saw that his lateness saddened Jove, so he worked up the courage to retaliate against his father's absence. The two got in a heated argument about it, which only worsened the stress.   Soon after, Vincent's father came down with the signs of overexertion. Terrified and self-blaming, Vincent hid from him, and Jove was caught in the middle of the two. Though their father's condition never worsened into Energy Sickness, which is what their mother had, he passed away in his sleep. Investigators later found that his equivalent had died in a car accident, causing the death.   Vincent and Jove had to move away and into the Nueven Foster Home soon after, which is where their story begins.   LATE STORY SPOILERS
Early on, Vincent accidentally releases magic energy into the forest, triggering the creation of ghosts. More information about the individual ghosts can be found here. One ghost in particular, Piper Maris, is summoned due to Vincent's similar trauma, and he and Vincent go hand in hand for sometime. At the end of the story, Vincent gives Piper a material form and the two are on slightly better terms.

Hobbies & Pets
