Skybreaker, the Astral Tempest

Skybreaker is an artifact created by Gond. It was wielded by Arus, Divine of Creation, and used to keep the balance between the planes in check.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Skybreaker harnesses the power of the Astral Plane to power some significant abilities. The bearer must be an individual with divine favor, and once fully attuned to the weapon it gains the following abilities.
  • Skybreaker gains a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls, and deals an additional 2d6 force damage on a hit as it races through its arc at the speed of the Astral Plane. Skybreaker also deals an additional 2d12 damage to objects, and each hit on an incorporeal object is an automatic critical.
  • Skybreaker can also be used to open a hungry portal to the Astral Plane once per day. When you target a creature with this effect, they must make a DC 19 Charisma Saving Throw to avoid being entranced by the dazzling array of stars visible to them from the other side. If they succeed, they must also succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity Saving Throw to avoid the portal's gravitational power (and be pulled 30ft toward the portal immediately). If both of these are a success, the portal shrinks back out of existence and the creature is unharmed. Otherwise, the creature is pulled into the abyss in the Astral Plane.
  • Finally, Skybreaker becomes much more powerful in interplanar space or on the Astral Plane. In such spaces, Skybreaker begins to become incorporeal itself. It gains the light and thrown properties, and is a returning weapon. It also deals an extra damage die from each of its damage types when used in this way.
  • Skybreaker has a total of 10 charges which can be used to fuel magical effects from Arus himself. These charges reset daily at dawn.
    • Using Skybreaker as a spellcasting focus you may cast the Banishment spell at will.
    • Using Skybreaker as a spellcasting focus you may cast the Contact Other Plane spell at will.
    • Using Skybreaker as a spellcasting focus, you may expend one of Skybreaker's charges to cast the Creation spell without consuming material components.
    • Using Skybreaker as a spellcasting focus, you may expend six of Skybreaker's charges to cast the Gate spell without consuming material components.

History

Skybreaker was made for Arus, the Divine of Creation and he wielded it in defense of the Material Plane as the forces of the Nine Hells advanced in the year 13643. This was before the Pact of Valonde was sealed, so Arus was able to act in defense of mortals and sent these demons back to the Lower Planes. When the Pact of Valonde was sealed, Arus retreated to the Astral Plane — allegedly to stay far away from the Material Plane as was now required. However, Arus had something else in mind entirely. Arus took Skybreaker with him to the Astral Plane where it was most comfortable and remained there until he witnessed a hero that deserved the assistance of Arus. At that moment, he summoned the might of the Astral Plane to send Skybreaker to the Material Plane in an instant, thus allowing the hero to save not only themself but also the Material Plane as Arus had not so long before.
