Illaran Ethnicity in Thelekar | World Anvil

Illaran

Born Apart

Despite being an ally of the Elven Union, and being elves themselves, the elves of Ille Alathar did not descend from the same line of elves as the rest of their cousins, and have never been anywhere near Sel Ath Tel'adar. Just like the Karadian humans, their origins are entirely separate from their eastern cousins. It is said that the two are the harmony and melody of Imba's Song of Creation, and that they will last together as two inseparable peoples until the song ends entirely, at the end of time. Despite this unity, the elves of Ille Alathar spend little time on Ardina proper in their Dratarian city of whitestone. Instead, they swim the Emerald Sea, brave the waters of The Grasp, and navigate the spawning grounds of leviathans with the grace of a trained dancer. They share cities with the Tritons, a branch of the Illaran elves that decided to forgo lives on land entirely, and are quite removed from the politics of Ardina as a whole.   Illarans are born for water, breathing it as easily as air. They swim alongside sea beasts and battle evil elementals, maintaining any portals to the Elemental Plane of Water that appear in their ocean territory. They are often responsible for slaying the creatures created by Kai'ri when her alignment shifts from good to evil, and keep grand trophy halls of the strongest creatures slain by their soldiers. Travelling the sea would be quite dangerous without the Illarans patrolling the deep.

Appearance

Though they spend much time underwater, Illarans have not become as fish-like as their Triton cousins. Their skin is generally a shade of blue or green, but their hair can be an assortment of colors, as can their eyes. While they lack the major mutations tritons have developed, their ears have become finned, and there is a small amount of webbing between their fingers and toes. They are taller than average elves, usually above 6 feet, and put on more muscle mass than their eastern cousins.
