Purple Veil

“If ye seeks a woman whose bed is still made, find the one with hands whose hue has yet to fade.” - Unknown
Originating from Rhoddneff, the image of a woman in a purple veil has become a symbol for ladies of the night all across Theatrum. This allows for an easy distinction between ‘respectable folk’ and streetwalkers. This symbol was heavily inspired by the goddess of beauty Vasarya, whose face held so much beauty that she wore a veil to mask it.    In the same light, these ladies of the night wear veils to shield their identities. Many of the clergy around Theatrum speak out against prostitution, but understand its necessity in up keeping “a civil society”. A streetwalker seen without her veil is heavily punished, in some cases even cast from the community.    When a lady enters the service of a madam in a house of company, they are expected to purchase and dye their own veils. This often leaves their hands dyed for many days afterwards, leaving an easy distinction between the inexperience and more seasoned companions.    The kind of fabric of the veil is used as another distinction. Less translucent fabric is seen as a cheap, and those that wear them are not as well versed or successful in their endeavors. Those with silks or translucent material are viewed with class, and seen as more skillful.

Significance

The symbol of the purple veil is used as the quickest way to identify a “respectable lady” vs a lady of the night.

Any purple or indigo flower may go into the crafting of a veil but the most popular is the Paeu Jaune, a small wildflower that decorates the grassy hills in Rhoddneff and Fuglen. When ground into a light powder, the petals of the small flowers create a deep lavender shade that is very prominent in the clothing in Estermery.
