Ogarine Mining

Perception

Purpose

True to the name, orgarine miners are the individuals who delve into the earth to acquire the rare magical mineral. While ogarine may rarely be found in surface deposits, or washed into rivers, these sources are insufficient when compared to the demands of the magical economies of the nations of Thea. To this end, dedicated ogarine miners are tasked with the large scale retrieval of the resource.

Social Status

Ogarine mining occures at some scale in nearly every nation on Thea, leading to diverse views on the individuals who make their living through it. For many it is seen as something not much different from any other mining, seeing the miners as a generally low class, but hard working folk. To the elves, who place a higher prestige in most things magical, ogarine mining is seen as an almost noble occupation, one that is of great benefit to society as a whole. It is also worth noting that within the three elven kingdoms where the overwhelming majority of the population are elves, the vast majority of ogarine miners are not elves.   In a few nations, namely the Theocracy of New Thrain and the Merchant States of the Twin Rivers, convicts and indentured servants are pressed into ogarine mining as a way to increase production to a level suitable for the massive demands of the government or economy. In these instances, most mining is seen as very low class work, but ogarine, with its higher degree of risk, is seen almost as work only fit for slaves.

Operations

Dangers & Hazards

The primary danger inherent in ogarine mining is not the possibilities of tunnel collapse, but just the exposure to the ogarine itself, specifically the dust made during operations. Either inhaling or ingesting ogarine dust in sufficient quantities will lead to Thaumic Poisoning. Due to this, most ogarine miners wear protective equipment of some form, commonly a magical or mundane mask, helmet or filter over the face, and are to bathe and change clothes after every shift.
