Session 14 - Reclamation

Report:

After the goons slay the yellow blobs, Aether heads back down the tunnel to the old Barracks to retrieve Nundro and finds that he has retrieved some of the old rusted armor from his fallen ancestors and geared up ready to take out Nezznar. The party decides the best place to look for the Black Spider is back at the Forge of Spells, and think it best to head back towards the cave entrance double-check for tracks of anyone leaving and then head back by their original path in case anyone decides to exit the cave by that route. After checking the entrance they head back towards the forge of spells. They arrive at the old entrance hall where they are ambushed by a couple of wormlike monstrosities, with a beak of a mouth and four barbed tentacles at its head, blending into the rock. One fo the Gricks springs at Duncun catching him by surprise and the goons jump into action defending themselves from the hungry monsters. After defeating the gricks the party makes its way to the fungi room and all of them except for Xavien manage to pass through the cavern without inhaling any of the poisonous spores. The party sneaks up to the forge of spells and Duncun gives a listen to the door and hears Nezznar cursing under his breath on the other side. The gang forms a plan to flank the black spider by having Kailo and Duncun enter the forge of spells from the side chamber to the north, while Aether, Xavien, & Nundro enter via the main door.

Duncun & Kailo move up to the side chamber and open the door to find two bugbears sitting around in a makeshift camp made in the room. One of the bugbears is wielding the longsword Talon, while the other is wearing the breastplate Dragonguard and is wielding Duncun's greatsword. The two move into the attack with Duncun drawing his bow and Kailo running in longsword in hand. The bugbears retaliate knocking Kailo unconscious. Meanwhile back at the main entrance, Nundro busts open the door and charges Nezznar, swinging the rusted mace he requisitioned from his fallen ancestors, while Aether throws fire and Xavien casts toll the dead at the drow. Nezznar manages to dodge the mace attack and Xavien's necromantic spell but Aether's fire catches him. The drow surprised and angered casts a spell and disappears. Aether hearing combat where Duncun and Kailo are - moves up to them, finds Kailo knocked out and casts a healing word then throws a ball of flame at one of the bugbears. The bugbear with the greatsword takes a swing at the revived Kailo with his newfound greatsword and puts him down once again. Back in the forge of spells Nundro swings his mace in the air cursing for the drow to show himself, while Xavien braces himself for an attack and conjures false life onto himself. Duncun continues his attack on the bugbears while Aether runs back to the forge and casts faerie fire in hopes to outline the potential invisible dark elf to no avail, as unknown to the group Nezznar has already made his way out of the forge. Aether transforms into a lion to track the black spider, while Xavien moves up to help Duncun, while Nundro continues to swing his weapon and scream curses in the empty forge. Xavien feels something brush past him and as he moves in the direction that he felt the thing go he runs into an object at the staircase and goes tumbling down the stairs, at the bottom he finds himself and Nezznar both laying on the ground. Nundro realizing what he is doing is pointless follows the others and seeing Duncun holding off the bugbears goes to his aid to slay the hairy goblinoids. Aether and Xavien both attack the black spider before he casts invisibility once again. The goons end up chasing Nezznar through half of the cave eventually catching up and cornering him in the dark pool chamber and slay the dark elf.

The party head back to Phandalin, reunite Nundro with his older brother Gundren and give the good news of the Black Spider's defeat. Gundren asks if the cave has been cleared of all threats so that they may start working on getting the mine operational. The party says for the most part except for the fact that a flaming skull that they defeated seemingly came back to life, someone suggests using holy water to consecrate the skull to hopefully prevent it from rising again, and the group head over to Sister Gareale in the hopes of obtaining some. The elf cleric goes about making the holy water and tells them to pick it up the next morning. The gang celebrate and rest at the inn and the next day they retrieve the holy water go back to the lost mine to defeat the flameskull for good. For their efforts, Gundren agrees to give the goons a ten percent share of the earnings of the mine, while Harbin Wester gives them a deed to the ruined Tresandor Manor.
