Foci

The Creation of a Foci

Every natural spell in Alyah requires some form of Foci to cast, a Foci is an object that implements a connection between the caster and the magic they are trying to cast. A foci can and will take any shape and cannot be purchased in a functioning form and will take time to bond with its caster. Foci are created through their connection to a specific feeling placed into the object, when a foci becomes bonded to a person its believe that Alyah has accepted those feelings, and the magic cast using that foci will respond with the same feelings you placed into it both in return that feeling into your body as you cast and visible effect. For Example, say that a gold coin is made into a foci, an extremely expensive foci by most common practitioners, depending on how the practitioner perceived this casting spells could feel, vain, prideful, greedy or loss for a romantic partner they gave up to earn it. The most common example is the light spell, when cast the light glows in the color most commonly tied to the emotion tied to foci. For detailed documentation on that particular spell feel free to read "The Rainbow of Emotions" a book that discusses the various hues of the light spell and what each might mean to ones emotion.

The Power of Compounding Emotions

There is one known ways to improve on the power or efficiency of a foci, by compounding multiple peoples feeling into a single foci if multiple people hold the a feeling for an object as a foci its nature will intensify or sometimes knotted if the emotions are too conflicting. An example if a wedding ring is made into a foci of love, both people feelings are tied to the object while it only can be channeled by a single person but the emotional attachment to that item will increase the output that the practitioner can channel. This practice is used by organization leaders, heads of households and religious figures, is considered a dangerous practice as if the community feelings become mixed the object can be come knotted. That is why it is considered safest to craft your own foci and place only your own emotions into it.

Knotting and Zamarrid's Harbor Imps

An object becomes knotted when multiple emotions that have clashing effect are placed into an object, if hate and love are placed into the same foci they could start butting heads this doesn't happen in every case and the exact tipping point has yet to be possible to determine. While a knotted foci will be powerful as the power of compounding emotions is still in effect it will also have demonsterous effects onto the caster and their spells, the best documented case include the Zamarrid's Harbor Imps, The city was able to determine that a pearl necklace had been made from several pearls belonging merfolks that was taken during an imperial raid, The woman gave it to her lover in hopes that the merfolk marriage rituals would compound positively with their own love and make a powerful foci. The conflicting emotions that the necklace held, were later determined to have feelings for revenge (likely from the family who lost it), disgust from the soldiers who stole it and as well as the couples own love and that of the original owners. When the woman attempted to summon her familiar the creature was summoned deformed and malicious, it attacked the woman and fled. The injuries may have been minor but that fleeing imp stowed away and found a way to multiply. The city's guards spent weeks thinning down the initial population boom while the harbor is mostly safe from imp threats, there will be an occasional imp damaging goods or small nest found attacking pets since then the practice of intentional creating compounded foci has been banned in Zamarrid, but that hasn't stopped some larger faction from creating their own in secret.
