The Urgok

A humanoid Species who live on the world of Uralakh. They are tall, strong and almost brutish looking but that exterior conceals one of the strongest magic using species in the whole Gilnares system.    A primal species that are powerfully attuned to magic, their society is split between the Nomadic and wasteland dwelling Urgok and the more cosmopolitan, static city dwelling Urgok. This split is rarely engaged with on the national scale, instead each side settling into their respective roles and places and rarely interfering with each other.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Urgok are a large, muscular humanoid with skin ranging from deep brown to a dark, forest green and all shades in between. They have two large tusks of varied size and shape thrusting out from their bottom lip and on average stand at 6 feet tall, often larger.

Genetics and Reproduction

They have little sexual dimorphism with females having breasts but little other differences, visually, from their male counterparts. They have a 6 month gestation and their young are born able to walk within a weeks time.

Growth Rate & Stages

Urgok growth is similar to Drynn, though they do have a distinct phase of their life known as "Wildling", right after they are born they are more functional than many other young but they have no higher level control and acting only on base instincts. They are naturally obedient to their mother but cannot communicate verbally. They grow out of this stage at around 3 years of age, this is when they are considered a child.    Urgok mature at 12 years of age and grow as old as 90 without life extension medication.

Ecology and Habitats

A species that is capable of adaptation, they do show a preference for hot and dry environments and overly humid ones tend to create strange skin diseases to arise among the population.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Omnivores, they do have a preference for meat.

Behaviour

The Urgok are often glorified in media as Warrior Scholars, or poets. They espouse intense application of their ideals, are frank about their views and are often willing to die for them. They are very hierarchical and are constantly and instinctually attempting to assert that around them.  This leads to fighting even among themselves and can be an especially hard trait to suppress or ignore among other species. They respect strength, though for them strength can be many things and mostly surrounds the idea of a recognizable hierarchy.    Urgok make intense but fast friends who are never afraid to tell you when you are wrong and unabashedly praise you when you succeed.

Additional Information

Social Structure

They are an intensely hierarchical species and even if not actively jockeying for position, they are always attempting to discern their ranking among those around them.    This social structure has little to do with gender or job but more has to do with perceived strength, actions and history. A shepherd may find themselves more higher ranked than a warrior if there is more worth to be found in the shepherds story. This can lead to wildly unqualified people being thrust to the top of Urgok society but ultimately it has lead to Magic Users leading lives far higher up the hierarchy than most any other.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Their naming traditions stem mostly from local custom and ethnic group.

Major Organizations

There are dozens of organizations and hundreds of ethnic groups represented in the Urgok Hierarchy. These groups all have leaders who select representatives for the ruling class of the Hierarchy.

Beauty Ideals

The Urgok appreciate large musculature, gratuitous displays of magic and intricately carved or decorated tusks. They also have a love for piercings.

Gender Ideals

To be strong is generally the only real ideal, what that means is dependent on the individual for the most part.

Courtship Ideals

These differ from culture to culture among the Urgok but they generally enjoy contests of strength, speed, endurance...things that test the person to their limits as a show of affection and suitability.

Average Technological Level

The Urgok under the Urgok Hierarchy attained a relatively modern level of technology though they had not yet achieved space-flight whenever the Drynn started appearing in the skies above them. It was not long until the Drynn attempted to create colonies and sparked a brutal war between the two peoples and it was through this that the Urgok rose to the stars.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Urgok almost always speak Ulang and several dialects of the Urgok tongue, Haux.

Common Etiquette Rules

The etiquette does very from cultural group to cultural group but some certain things hold true or are enforced from the top down by the Urgok Hierarchy. These things include proper deference for rank, both implicit and explicit.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Warriors and Magic-Users, Urgok culture has always vacillated between aggression and wisdom and considers both traits to be important historically.

Common Taboos

Showing Weakness and ignorance of the hierarchy are considered social fax paux though rarely are they met with an governmental concern. Flouting of Hierarchy and social standing are taken more seriously.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Urgok get along with other species, though they often run into trouble as their superiority complex and strict hierarchies can cause them to attempt to impose their will on situations where they are not actively considered in charge or socially equal.

Urgok off Uralakh

The Urgok are seen as intense and strong among other species, often semi-isolating them as they can intimidate those around them with their singular focus and emotional intensity. They are also often sought after as advisors because those same traits tend to lead to pure and unaltered advice, magic using Urgok even more so. The Urgok are well spread throughout old Union Space and often hold positions of power in the areas they previously helped manage. They were equally spread throughout the military and the government and you can find those remnants everywhere.    There are relatively high populations of Urgok on most inhabited planets, often making up the 2nd largest demographic on a world and as such they are moderately well accepted though they are likely to suffer racism, isolation and worse on some worlds or communities, those that chafed under the Union of Gilnares.

Urgok in the Union of Gilnares

Other than the Drynn you could not find stronger supporters of the Union of Gilnares than the Urgok. The two species clashed spectacularly whenever the Drynn made it to space and several Drynnish nations attempted to colonize Uralakh but soon became fast friends. Whenever the Union of Driwynn rose, the Urgok Hierarchy eagerly joined hands with the new government to form the Union of Gilnaresand would go on to conquer the system with sword and pen over the course of 150 years and would go on to be deeply entwined with the Union of Gilnares for the following 300. Urgok often enjoyed high social status and a high amount of inclusion in the Union of Gilnares government across all sectors.    When the Dissolution happened they were among the strongest supporters for the Union and while the Urgok Hiearchy withdrew from the Union officially at the end of the Dissolution, they still recognize the Union of Gilnares in Exile as a formal ally and are among the few governments that recognize it.
