The Drun (Druune)

The Scrabbling Vermin in the Dark

Stunted and cancer-ridden inhabitants of the world Helraad the Drun are the dejected remnants of failed Mulnwahrwhose time spent in the deep radiation zones of the the world have left them broken shadows of their former selves.   The Drun do not have a society, at least not as the Mulnwan or Mulnwahr understand it. Their settlements are ramshackled affairs, built upon cities had been destroyed or disabled long enough for the moons rotation to carry them deep into the radiation zone of the worlds rotation or in the warrens that wind between the deep and regular city tunnels. There is little connection between roving bands of Drun and their settlements and even rarely is there peaceful contact between them and the Dunwan or Dunlar.   They sometimes live in peace with the Jissarai and they can often live in the same settlements in relative peace so long as the food supplies are strong. They are used by the Jissiman as fodder in their mercenary companies and are one of the primary reasons that there are Drun and Jissarai infestations all over the solar system.   The name of the species is the word for "Trash" in Raghlin.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Drun are a stunted race of humanoids who are often malnourished to the point of emaciation. Their coarse hair grows in patches across pox scarred scalp and scraggly beards burst in knotted ropes from tumor ridden faces.    They generally stand no taller than 2 and a half feet tall and while they are bipedal, they often move in a hunched scuttle. They usually have two arms and two legs but the rampant birth defects often leave them with club-feet, missing digits and limbs or extra vestigial parts.    The Drun' average lifespan is 30 years. A huge infant mortality rate is matched only by the murderously large rate of cancer and genetic diseases have a tendency to keep the average very low. An ancient among the Drun is 50 years of age.

Genetics and Reproduction

Breed often, Breed early is the theme of the Drun. Their lifespans are so short and their children die so often that it is common for Drun females to breed as soon as they are able.

Growth Rate & Stages

Drun mature fast, coming into adulthood at the age of 15 and expected to take on adult duties at that time. They are considered middle aged by 20 and old by 40.

Ecology and Habitats

These broken creatures live in the depths of the moon of Helraad, surviving by hunting the insane beasts that have evolved there as well as raiding Dunlar, Dunwar and Jissarai settlements. They are absolutely cannabilistic and will eat anything they can catch.    The Drun have long suffered under the terrible radioactive effects of Gilnares and live in both static settlements and nomadic bands.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Drun can eat nearly anything and often do so as the depths of Helraad often have as much bane as it does bounty.

Behaviour

The Drun are a chaotic people and a lack of unified culture and the high degree of madness prevalent among them leads an incredibly fractured and very individualistic people.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

These folk see exceedingly well in the dark as almost their entire lives are spent underground. The Drun do poorly in direct light, sunlight especially causes them significant discomfort and they avoid it if at all possible.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

The Drun hold the same naming conventions as their cousins the Mulnwahr and Mulnwan but they often drop the Ragha portion of the extended name and will replace it with random words that they happen to like, sometimes changing by the week.

Gender Ideals

There is no difference between Male and Female Drun in terms of expectations and ideals, the species is entirely focused on survival.

Courtship Ideals

Courtship is an oddly complex thing for the Drun, especially for a species who holds breeding to be as important as it is. While marriage or even long term relationships are not the most common among the Drun, they can often spend months building a relationship of love and affection between couples before any children are born.    Arranged marriages are unheard of among Helraad Drun, instead the interested pair will build a rapport and begin to live together for months or even years before. Once any children are born and weaned the couple will usually split, whichever wants to care for the children more taking them while the other parent often has nothing to do with the children.

Relationship Ideals

The Drun do not have strong family relationships but they do have incredibly strong friendships and will often mold their lives around those friendships. Nomadic bands and static settlements are built around these groups of friends.

Average Technological Level

The Drun are not technologically advanced on their own but they are incredibly skilled tinkers and jury riggers and have the capacity to be brilliant engineers if given the proper tools and situation.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

The Drun mostly speak Raghlin but they will often sprinkle borrowed words from Jis and anyone else they meet so an older Drun will often speak a dialect known as Ragdrun which can be almost unintelligible to even other Drun who have not lived around them for a long time.

Common Taboos

Rape is seen as the ultimate taboo and is a crime that is usually punished by being driven to the surface of the world when it is in The Shade. This is tied deeply to an inherent sense of impurity to the species and really the only unified aspect of their culture, they know they lived a mildly cursed existence and the creation of life is the only thing they can say is without that. Sullying that is considered the gravest of actions.    Murder, theft, etc are rarely even punished by the group, though individuals will always pursue their own justice.

Drun off Helraad

The Drun adapt to life off of Helraad very well as anywhere not an irradiated hell-hole is almost easy living for them.    They dislike the sun or any bright lights so often choose to live underground wherever they find themselves and are often treated like an infestation by the other races in old union space.    They are most prevalent holed up in the guts of space stations and asteroids. They carve out their own domains and unless dug out early will often create entire undercities that are rife with black marketing and smuggling.    They are moderately effective miners with little to no care for their own mortality so crews of Drun are often used for dangerous mining operations.
