Golba

One of the species who evolved on the world Tresin, the Golba are large humanoids with overly long arms and traits reminiscent of Ursine predators and great apes with long ears and stubby tails.   Individuals from this species are found all over Union space but rarely are found in groups when away from their homeworld.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Golba are tall, thickly built humanoids with lanky arms and vaguely bear like features, thick fangs are sometimes visible protruding from between their lips.    Their long arms and thick, stubby nails allow them to climb easily in their arboreal home though they are equally at ease on the ground. They have long ears that droop with trailing tendrils of fur.

Genetics and Reproduction

These creatures reproduce sexually and have a 14 month gestation time, often having twins or triplets.

Growth Rate & Stages

Golba are considered adults at 40, they are a long lived species who can live up to 1000 years though they enter their hibernation stages for longer and longer periods after 600 years of age which can extend their true lifespan much further though they are notoriously hard to wake.

Ecology and Habitats

These creatures are an Arboreal species and find the most comfort in the deep forests, though they do find themselves wandering the coastal plains of their home world they do not often make a habit of staying there for longer than a season at a time. Though they can and do climb, they rarely make their homes in the boughs of the trees and instead opt to live in caves or handmade shelters made of hide, cloth and wood that they travel with.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Golba are omnivorous without any real preference as a species, they live nomadically and will follow the seasons and the herds of prey animal as needed.

Biological Cycle

As Golba grow older, they begin to enter periods of hibernation. They often enter their first hibernation, usually a period of 4-8 weeks sometime after their 60th birthday. The amount of times that a Golba feels the need to hibernate is dependent on that particular Golba but a general rule of thumb is that every ten years they will hibernate followed by a like period of wakefulness. These periods of wakefulness decrease as the periods of hibernation grow longer.    Not much is known about why these hibernations exist from a biological perspective, what is known is that the Golba enter a dreaming state where they commune with and care for the world in another plane of existence that they call "The Sleeping World".

Behaviour

These creatures are insular and generally do not form close bonds with those outside of their direct family, even among other Golba.    Though they travel together in with their family they often enjoy isolation, living around their family and moving together but a single family group might be spread over 10-20 miles of forest and they will see each other maybe once a week. They tend to be quiet, taciturn creatures who prefer to keep their council and speak only when action would not suffice.

Additional Information

Social Structure

The Golba do not observe any real hierarchy as each individual generally lives their life as they wish, influenced by the norms of their particular family group and the extended familial connections derived from that.    They have a high respect for age and their elders often hold positions of leadership within the nomadic groups.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

They make their homes primarily under the boughs on the floor of the forests that cover much of the world of Tresin.

Civilization and Culture

Beauty Ideals

Golba consider unrefined natural things to be beautiful in their organic randomness, taking delight in the strange ways that things can grow to suit the environment they are in.    They apply this same metric to themselves with different golba finding others attractive based on their own enjoyment of the natural processes that brought them to the state they are in now both physically and mentally.    Golba do not have a defined understanding of what makes a creature "Broken" in the same way that other species do, they can acknowledge when something is lame or injured easily enough but the negative connotations for something being "Crippled" are not the same as one might find in other species.

Gender Ideals

They do not differentiate between genders in any practical way.

Courtship Ideals

Due to the isolation and insular nature of the Golba, courtship is often more a product of accidental meeting than any assigned ritual, though elders will often arrange for young Golba to meet during family events and the rare meetings of family groups on their nomadic journeys.

Relationship Ideals

Romantic partners will often be the only Golba, aside from children, who share a space. Even then they will often have a shared location where they spend time together but also have distinct, though close by, areas where they keep their personal lives. Adjacent but separate.    Friendships among them are deep and long running, though they might not see the other golba for years at a time they have a firm memory of that friendship and will always be keen to catch up whenever they chance to be in the same area as the other.    The relationships between siblings and between parents and their children are the strongest bonds among the Golba, creating vast networks across the forest as families extend throughout other families. Though these attachments tend to fade within a few generations and the Golba do not keep deep records on family lines outside the need to prevent close incest. Children live with their parents until they are ready to leave, often a bit after 40 but there is no real social impetus to drive children from the family and they can stay for decades longer depending on that specific families dynamic.

Average Technological Level

The Golba take easily to technology but tend to be discerning on when a piece of technology is worthwhile to them, this is very centered on the individual but they are not very materialistic and usually only have objects that have a use for their own specific needs. This does not mean they do not obtain objects for entertainment or enjoyment it just means they have a tendency to not obtain material goods unless they have a clearly defined purpose for them.

Golba off Tresin

Insular creatures, they can be found in old Union space as lone adventurers or mercenaries. It is rare for a Golba family to wander offworld and even rarer for them to be spacers with their own nomadic ship but when this does happen you can find them either deep in a worlds forests or in a ship filled with water and plant-life to give them some solace surrounded by the forests they love.

Golba in the Union of Gilnares

The Golba very rarely were involved with the Union of Gilnares, instead they were almost always in opposition to it and were instrumental in starting the first events of the Dissolution with the Erowa and causing the initial cracks in the union that would grow to consume and destroy it.
