Folklore and Stories of Telmar

Found below are some of the superstitions and folk stories that some denizens of Telmar believe in. Where many simply see these as Old Wives' Tales, there are still some that believe wholeheartedly in the tales.

Superstitions

  • If you hear a cat sneeze, you've just been given good luck! The cat was warding off an evil spirit for you.
  • The seventh son of a seventh son is destined to become a great person, and will have amazing powers. Disease will never touch them and they will have an unnaturally long life.
  • On the Annual Holiday of the Harvest Festival, you should place a single Gold Crown under your plate for the harvest meal or feast. This will pay your way for a good winter, with warmth and food.
  • When buying a new house or property, a coin should be put in a corner of each room and left for a week. This will ward off any bad luck and spirits that the previous owners left.
  • On the evening of a full moon, one should throw a lock of their hair in to a fire. If the fire burns brighter, it is a sure sign that you will live a long life.

Corn Dolls

It is a belief that a Spirit lives in every farmer's field amongst the crops, and helps the plants grow. At the time of the harvest, the Spirit will lose its home as the grain is cut. Farmers should make a small doll from the crop to give the Spirit a place to live for the winter. Several tales say that if this is not done, the Spirit will haunt the farmer's family, often possessing a scarecrow to harm and terrorise them.

The Milltown Imp

A small, grotesque statue of an Imp can be found in the main market square in Milltown. The legend goes that a witch sent the Imp to cause trouble in the town. But a follower of the Holy Light challanged the Imp when it appeared. Holding up their holy symbol and uttering a prayer, the Imp turned to stone, and has remained there since.
