Folklore and Stories of Eastfold
Found below are some of the superstitions and folk stories that some denizens of Eastfold believe in. Where many simply see these as Old Wives' Tales, there are still some that believe wholeheartedly in the tales.
Superstitions
Skinwalkers
At night, often in forests but sometimes the rocky plains of Eastfold, strange deer may be found that appear to move in awkward ways. If you see them, you should turn from them straight away and never look back as you leave. If you continue to watch them, they will eventually stand up on their hind legs. Claws will grow from their front hooves, their skin will start to rot and within their mouth, monstrous teeth will form. They will look at you with pitch black eyes, and remember your face. From now on, the curse of the Skinwalker is on you, and they will stalk you forever. You will hear them at night trying to break in to where you live. They often mimic voices to lure you outside, and try all the tricks they can to gain access to where you sleep. None can say what happens when they finally find you, but it cannot be a good fate, for all that is left is empty, bloodstained clothes.
The Chime Hours
Several versions of this myth exist throughout Eastfold, and depending on the area you are in depends on the variation. It is said that a child born at a certain hour will gain special "gifts". The hour is typically midnight, but can vary. Such gifts could be magical capabilities, or even the ability to see ghosts.
The Black Lady of Bainbury Woods.
"If you don't go to sleep, the Black Lady will get you!"
This is a tale often told to children to get them to sleep. Several variations of the story exist, but all agree that it happened in Bainbury Woods, located between Brindel and Glynarthen. It is said that a spirit of a woman can be seen late at night, wandering the woods. Young and pretty, she is dressed in a flowing black cloak with a black hood. Wind always seems to flow past her, even on still nights. For those that have gotten closer, she has a haunted look; her face being both tear-stained and mounrful.
Superstitions
- If you've moved house, don't bring your old broom from your old one. If you do, you're also bringing all the bad luck!
- If a person is sick, hang a piece of red cloth on their door to draw the attention of healing spirits.
- On the annual Holiday of The Day of the Sun, it is customary for girls and women in a village or town to run through it. As they run, water is thrown at them be onlookers. Anyone throwing the water will be given good luck for the coming months. After the run has been finished, everyone who threw the water must give gifts to those that ran, else they will be given bad luck for the year.
- If you leave something at home forgetfully and go back to get it, you should look in a mirror before leaving again. If you do not do this, you will have a bad journey.
