The Standard Arden Calendar

The grand Mage Mortelaten lived and developed many breakthroughs and practices that are still found across Arden today. One of these was the Standard Arden Calendar. After observing the passing of the stars, planets, moon and stages of the year, Mortelaten developed a way to track the years precisely.

It had been theorised years before that the stages of the seasons and sun would take exactly 365 days in order to get back to where it started, and this was typically used to decide how many years had passed. Mortelaten took this a step further by splitting the year in to 30 day segments, and named the months after a long-dead language. However, this still left 5 days spare. It was first decided that these would be added to the end of the year, as an extra 5 days, but on trialling it himself, Mortelaten decided to instead split the days up amongst the months, roughly placing them to correspond with any pre-existing religious days from the time before the Kingdom of Arden.

Mortelaten also pinpointed the exact year that the Kingdom of Arden was formailised, and set this as the year that all future dates should be categorised from. In this sense, he created the term Arden's Foundation, with the abreviation AF. Thus, all years could then be tracked from the foundation of the Kingdom, with an example being 350 AF being the 350th year after Arden was formally recognised as a Kingdom. For periods before this date, the abbreviation BA is used, standing for Before Arden.
