Shantu

His father being the second in command for the most powerful gang in the city, Shantu grew up in a lavish like environment: all he knew from a young age was stolen luxury and high status built from fear. A slave for every wish, an indulgence for every whim: he never had to struggle for much of anything.
And he hated it.
As a teen he struggled against his family, trying to escape the palace that he later found was once owned by a local noble that his father had murdered. He rarely succeeded in sneaking out and whenever he was caught his father severely punished him. Shantu had a taste for music. Not for creating it, his people lacked any sort of creativity due to a long-ago curse, but he loved to listen and even more so loved to mimic what he heard.
He needed out of the crime-filled life his father lived. He wanted a challenge for himself, more than simple thievery. And so, after weeks of planning, he finally broke out, heading off in a direction he knew only was away from his father's luxury. He earned his meals and places to sleep by playing the music he learned to copy. Eventually, he found himself at a faraway temple and, after deciding this was the challenge he sought, trained there to become a monk. There they taught him to control his body and his mind and to defy all of the comforts he always had and hated.
After a couple of years of training, his hunger for the challenge was alive but focussed into internal calamity and contemplation.
Recently, however, his focus had been waning. He began to become increasingly distraught. Something just wasn't right.
The longer time went on, the more he tried to understand what was wrong. He felt he couldn't let go of his past.
He had hated the comfort that his father had forged off the backs of innocents, this he knew, and he loved to be challenged. He was still accustomed to his new lifestyle as a monk, but his efforts in connecting to divinity left him wanting. He wanted riches. He wanted status.
He wanted to be powerful, much like the father he hated.
He tried to resist this wanting, but he felt that there was little he could do to stop it. He left the temple and decided he would follow his desire to overcome this new and great internal challenge. No matter where it took him or what it would cost.
