Sebrezal’s Betrayal
21st Horsebow Moon

It was early morning when we were woken up by the manor being attacked, us being captured, and locked in a small room without our weapons. Great way to start a day after being attacked by bandits the previous day. We quickly broke out of the room and split up with Therion, Emelina, and I heading downstairs to find our gear. We also ended up finding two injured bandits and a dead Richard. We couldn’t question the injured bandits yet so we tied them up and headed back to the others. It seemed no one else was in the manor including Sebrezal.   We returned to the bandits and stabilized their health and began questioning them. Lyrellia cast some sort of spell to make them speak the truth and we learned that the group was the same one that attacked us in the street and was looking for their leader’s sister that Sebrezal captured. The full story is that Sebrezal sold stolen goods at a higher price, and this group stole the goods for him. When a job went south and they were captured, Sebrezal paid off the police but also kidnapped the sister and threatened them to keep working. After that and being underpaid, they attacked, we fought them, and they attacked the manor.   So it turned out we were on the wrong side the whole time. We were paid by a rotten businessman and lied to. I suggested we rob Sebrezal’s house, and it’s fair game after all; he lied to us and he should’ve mentioned he had a target on his back from people who were rightfully pissed off. I thought I had Kassian and Therion on my side but the others convinced them otherwise because apparently, they’re all too good for that sort of thing, I guess. It didn’t seem worth it to argue so I let it go. Besides, it’s not fun to rob a house when everyone else is a stick in the mud. After that, we decided to head to the Fire Flower Inn, where the bandits said their leader would be after we released them. Ma was there and led us to a private room and we talked it out with the leader, Ghona.   Things happened quickly after that and I can't remember anything other than the important stuff. Ghona told us that Sebrezal and her sister are in the manor’s secret basement, which I'm upset that I didn’t know about. Rich guys always have hidden rooms and I didn't even think to check. We agreed that after we defeat Sebrezal and rescue her sister, that Ghona can do what she pleases with him. We returned to the manor, battled it out, and won. With Ghona’s sister rescued, Sebrezal earned himself a punch to the face. Then the gang left the city while it was still dark and we all headed back to the inn to rest.   Now, not to be pessimistic but it’s only been four days and all my plans have been turned upside down. I know I came here for paying work but right now things aren’t going as I hoped, especially when my group is mostly people who are just now leaving their sheltered lives and won’t rob a lying rich guy’s house with me. Still, I’ve gotta keep an eye on the goal. Things aren’t going as I hoped, I took a bad job without thinking, I didn’t ask enough questions, didn’t get a grasp of the whole picture, didn’t make a plan, but jumped in without thinking. Ideally, I’d come up with a plan but knowing me I won’t remember it anyway, so might as well wing it.

Bodyguard duty and Carriage Fight
20th Horsebow Moon

Yesterday was even more bodyguard duty and it was about as eventful as the previous day. We got an update on our work from the old bodyguard, Richard. He’s an older man and clearly not suited for a bodyguard position anymore. No wonder Sebrezal didn’t feel safe when he's got this ancient relic watching over him. The job is simple, we guard Sebrezal’s carriage, survey his warehouses as he does business things, and then guard the carriage back. Simple and boring. This time around I’ll be paired with Therion, the young half-elf whose mechanical owlbear attacked us before.   The trip to the warehouse was uneventful and patrolling the warehouses even more uneventful. Sebrezal has some sort of shipment company that transports goods from north to south. All we saw were people working around the docks, nothing unusual or interesting. So far this job was a walk in the park. Or it was, until the ride back to the manor.   It all happened so suddenly but one second the street was full of people bustling about and the next it’s empty. Suddenly a cart rolled across the street quickly and overturned in front of the carriage. A woman stood up on the cart and told Sebrezal to exit the carriage, and when he didn’t, bandits and pirates attacked our party. Talk about making an entrance.   It was a tough fight and it didn’t look good for us in the beginning, with 6 against 10 or more bandits. But we managed to fight them off and protect our employer. I felt sort of useless though since I couldn’t fight back as well but it seemed like we were all a little caught off guard. After all the enemies were gone, we were joined by a lizard-looking fellow named Soloman, whom I certainly didn’t notice before. Everyone talked about the battle and it seems as if Lyrellia, Emelina, Quintella, and this Soloman have never fought, let alone killed anyone before in their lives. We all returned to the manor to rest after that.   Now I know there’s no sense in regretting bridges already crossed but after that fight, I don’t know if it was right to take the job. Maybe I should’ve waited for my contact after all. But it doesn’t matter, since I took the job and I'm getting paid and other than being attacked by bandits it’s going okay-ish. So it’s all fine. Right? But still, it’s the money I'm worried about. That's all I worry about these days. Maybe I could cut my contract short and find work elsewhere? But then again what are the odds I’ll even be able to find work in this town? Should I risk it? Probably not.   On another note, it seemed like a bit of a shock to Lyrellia, Emelina, Quintella, and Soloman when they realized they had fought and killed strangers. Their only solace seemed to be that they were attacked first so it was self-defense, but you could tell it didn’t sit well with them. Maybe it’s better they learn it now rather than later? It’s a rude wake-up call but hey, if they continued traveling they’d have to realize it eventually. It’s hard going anywhere without running into a little trouble that involves some sort of bodily harm. Sometimes, no matter how you try to avoid it, someone is going to get hurt and sometimes it’s better if it’s not you. I know I could probably be more sympathetic to these young new travelers but thinking things can be solved with kind words is wishful thinking.

A New Job Opportunity
18th Horsebow Moon

My contact never showed up but a better, more worthwhile opportunity showed up. A scroll was dropped off for me and everyone else in the group that fought the mechanical creature yesterday; an offer for contract service from some noble patron. The pay was quite high, so maybe it’s not bad that my contact never showed up. I thought about thinking it over for a while and weighing the odds but when I saw the others leave I felt like the odd one out so I followed them. After arriving and being led to the study I made sure to note the windows and doors, since it's always important to find another way out; not that I’d want to try fighting out of a heavily guarded manor alone. The patron himself arrived shortly and explained the job. Sebrezal is your typical high lord, probably very well off, swimming in business deals, high and mighty, and all that. I could be biased but I don’t wanna trust him too much but money is money so I’ll try not to complain.   We would be acting as bodyguards, patrolling the manor and various locations he’d be in, to protect him. He said that the city is becoming more dangerous for him due to “deals going south” which I’m not sure how to feel about. Still, we all accepted the job and started immediately in groups of two. I was paired up with the Ardent elf Lyrellia to patrol about the manor and everything went fine.   After our first day, all I can say is the pay is good but the job is boring. I know beggars can’t be choosers but I wish it was a bit more interesting. Also, all I’m thinking about is how I’ve got to make a lot of gold soon if I plan to send it back to The Gold Snakes. Is 2 gold a day really going to get me anywhere? But maybe it’s a short job, maybe this Sebrezal will realize he doesn’t need the extra protection and let us go with a bonus? But that’s probably just my desperation talking.

Arrival in Kelathar
17th Horsebow Moon, 1173

17th of the Horsebow Moon, 1173   After some tedious travel, I finally made it to Kelathar today around evening and found the place where I was to meet with my contact, The Fire Flower Tavern. I hoped that after my long journey something would go right, and my meeting with my contact would be quick and I could start on the next job. But of course, nothing ever goes the way I hope it will.   Took a look around the tavern but the only person of note was someone hooded sitting in the corner. I took a seat at a table near them, maybe they were my contact but I doubted it. A bit later, some cheerful Ardent came over, looking to spread the word of Vorinism, which is definitely not what I needed after just arriving to the city. But she seemed young and so perky so I thought it would be too cruel to just ignore her. I listened to her spiel and took her pamphlet; cute drawing but not very informative, only said: "Vorinism is Cool!"...but her heart is in the right place I suppose.   After she left, I saw the hooded person hurry upstairs but I didn't get a good look at them. I had a feeling they probably weren't my contact...   Sometime later, something big and angry as hell crashed through the tavern wall. Ran outside and saw a mechanical creature causing havoc in the street, with a small group fighting it back. I hide and saw an opening in the armor of this creature and took my chance. Got one of my knives right in between its gears, which looked like it delayed it a bit. A few more hits form this ragtag group and the creature went down.   After all the fighting, I got my knife back scratched up from this half-elf who was working on fixing the creature; apparently it belongs to him. I also felt a strange breeze, I figured someone in the group healed us but I didn't have a need for it. I went back to my table inside and eavesdropped on the Ardent speaking to the hooded person from before; it turns out they know each other, childhood friends.   It's too late for my contact to show up, so I rented a room in the tavern. I would've preferred not to but maybe they'll show up eventually.
