Kelathar Settlement in The World of Roshar | World Anvil

Kelathar

Kelathar, known as the River City, is nestled on the Cultivation river on the eastern edge of Alethkar in between rolling hills east of the Deathbend river, and west of the Eastern Edge, the forest on the eastern border of Alethkar.

Government

The government is run with light eye lords like in all cities, however the shippers hold true sway in this river city. The City lord and ruler of the princedom is High Lord Kalanor, and while by no means a center of trade, it is an important route for trade with Vadin. The shippers who hold sway often advise on public policy to benefit the business men, and thus a large underground market has opened up in Kelathar. It is rumored that organized crime runs much of the city, and many light eye lords under Lord Kalanor are involved.

Defences

The city has its basic walls, however the river access is relatively unguarded. The city does have a set of wooden gates that can be slide into place to block traffic in or out through the river, however it is rare that they are used. Kelathar, being so far north and east away from most enemy cities, has never really needed to be defended much.

Industry & Trade

Most inhabitants are involved (in one aspect or another) in trade and shipping. While most hold down honest work, many participate in criminal activity, or are unaware the business they work for is actually a front for criminal activity. People who ask questions generally don't last long.

Infrastructure

Through the center of the city, the broad Deleau river runs through as a sort of main street. Wide enough for two barges can go in opposite directions, with many feet between the two. In fact, it is often that small gondola's are piloted around the river, ferrying travelers and citizens alike across the length of the city. Large high bridges allow for foot and cart traffic to cross the Delau. In essence this is similar to Venice, Italy, except with only one river.

Assets

The Deleau River.

Guilds and Factions

The basic crafting and trade guilds form the basic chamber of commerce, which is more out for protecting self interests and profits than anything else. There is rumor that the Xanathar crime guild, the RoseThorne company, the Xents, Grey Wardens, and the Harper's all work operations in the city. More recent whispers suggest there may be a need bandit gang roaming the streets.

Architecture

A sort of blend between the Champs Elysee and river areas in Paris, classic medieval European urban architecture, and specifically Venetian architecture and bridges.
