Personal history

Reiner Vovrust was born in 1151 EOS, to parents who owned a mercantile company that shipped caravans of good across Roshar. Once he turned 17, he began running with caravans, intending one day to inherit his family business. In 1170, he went out with a caravan, which was ambushed by goblin raiders. It is unclear where he went after the attack, however, what is known is somewhere along the way he and Kaladin met. In 1171 EOS, Kaladin and Reiner were present as slaves on a bridge crew for High Lord Sadeas at the Betrayal of Fourpoint Pond. Defying orders, Kaladin, Reiner, and their fellow crew on Bridge 4 returned to where High Lord Dalinar had been left, and launched their bridge, allowing the Kholin army to retreat. For their efforts, Bridge 4 was freed of the bonds, and offered positions as guards to Dalinar. Reiner and Kaladin were named captain's of Bridge 4, and took up their posts immediately. Having lost a significant portion of his officers in the betrayal, Dalinar commissioned Reiner (and later Kaladin) as an officer in his army. The two became known for the juggernaut strike force qualities of the squads they commanded in war, Reiner being well known for his mounted cavalry units, while Kaladin was known for his infantry division.

It is rumored that Reiner has been Nightblessed, touched by the Nightwatcher with the ability to achieve some form of foresight. According to the gossip mill, this is what makes him such a good tactician, because he can tell an opponents strategy.
