The Fortress of Mananaan Myth in The World of Popkin | World Anvil

The Fortress of Mananaan

As every Popkin child knows, this island was born out of the sibling rivalry of the gods, and they have been squabbling over it ever since. There may only be four of them, but the web of schemes, alliances, vendettas, and agreements among them is endless, and the total effect is balance, for now. For example, in accordance with an arrangement they've had since the beginning, every day Piruun helps Mananaan sneak onto the island to steal a few grains of earth from Taak and return them to his home: the sea. And yet, inexplicably, every now and then Mananaan undoes all his progress against Taak by going too far to piss off Din and Piruun  Most of you probably remember the story of Piruun's hot and cold ass -- it's one of the few stories about Piruun that we still remembered, until our reunion with our Shattertide cousins, at least. What fewer people know, however, is that what was really going on was that Mananaan had decided to ditch the slow and steady approach and oppose Taak directly -- he had decided to stay.   I don't know if Piruun was in on the scheme, but for whatever reason, he and Din were having a humdinger of a falling-out, and this gave Mananaan his opening.  Just as they had always done, Piruun and Mananaan played their daily game of sneaking onto the island. We've all seen how, in the winter times when Piruun is taking refuge from Din at the top of the mountains, sometimes Mananaan will stick around to keep him company for a few days. This time, though, Mananaan lulled his brother to sleep, and then sat on him.  For years.  For TEN. THOUSAND. YEARS.  Mananaan built a fortress, basically his own mountain on top of Amaan Moridin, entombing his sleeping brother in the ice.   Everyone loves the story of the heroic Sandhammer chief who got Din to light a fire under Piruun's sleeping tucchus, but -- sorry Kaleena -- this actually all happened way before any of our people even lived on Popkin.  Din did try to wake Piruun up by burning his bum a few times, but it was really because Taak was complaining to her about having to support the weight of Mananaan's insulting ice mountain (and because she was still miffed with Piruun about whatever had caused their falling-out, and a bit of  butt-burning felt satisfying).  She didn't accomplish much, however, except to play right into Mananaan's long-term plan.   Eventually, Din forgot about her grudge against Piruun, and she and Taak told Mananaan that he'd proven his point, he was the top sibling, now please stop sitting on your brothers and squishing their houses.  Mananaan pretended like this was all he had wanted, and like he was graciously acquiescing, and agreed to leave the mountaintop.  But this had been his plan all along!  He'd spent ten thousand years building his fortress downward, not just upward, and Din's outbursts had just given him even more opportunities to extend his grasp. As he packed up his fortress and pushed it back into the sea, he took a lot of the mountaintop with it, carving huge chunks out and leaving Amaan Moridin forever changed. Before returning to the deeps, he turned to his stunned siblings with a bow and a smile, and said "Don't forget, eventually, everything comes back to me."
