Spiritborn

Spiritborn   Out there in the world are men and women who have been touched by the Spirit World. Some might not yet know of their connection, others may have learned to harness it, and yet more will have been driven from their homes or killed because of their unnatural abilities. The Spiritborn may look just like humans, at least until their powers begin to manifest and grow. Then, the changes within them become more noticeable, more difficult to hide, and thus a life of suspicion and fear awaits them.   Ancient Experiments   Long ago, before the Devastation, there was a powerful wizard known for both his vast intellect and his willingness to push the boundaries of magic. Tolerated by his peers for the advances he made, those advances came with a very real cost. Using captured spirits and human slaves, he experimented with bonding the former to the latter using powerful spells. Ultimately successful, the effects of these experiments would not be known for many years.   Lasting Consequences   While those bonded to the spirits gained great powers, they lived and died as the humans they were. For the spirits however, the powerful bonds placed on them would not break so easily. Forever bound to this world, the spirits would find themselves pulled back by their bond, bound to the bloodlines of their original hosts. Thus they were caught in an endless cycle, one that would only end once the last of the bloodline they were bonded to died, though this would also mean the end of the normally immortal spirits. The humans that inherited these spirits had no choice over the matter; they too were victims of this ancient magic, and many would come to suffer greatly for it.   Fear and Power   When the spirit bonds to the soul of a human host, the innate powers of the Spirit World infuse the man or women who inherits them. These effects may not be apparent immediately, yet as they grow from children to adults, the powers within them will begin to manifest in strange and sometimes dangerous ways. This has often led to those who become known as Spiritborn to be looked upon with fear by their communities, or in some rare cases, with reverence and awe. In all cases, they are no longer seen as normal men and women, but something else, something more powerful and dangerous than those around them.   Never Alone When the Spiritborns powers begin to grow, so does their connection to the spirit that inhabits them. The most obvious, and most frightening to the young man or woman, is the sudden appearance of a strange and alien voice inside their head. The bond between them allows the spirit to communicate with it's host this way, which can create even greater strain on the Spiritborn, who must deal with their newfound powers as well as the presence of a foreign entity inside their head. Those who survive this trying period, however, may find great benefit in the knowledge of the spirit, providing they can come to some accord with these strange and exotic creatures.   Spiritborn Names   Spiritborn will have the same names as the cultures they were born into, though some who might find themselves exiled or driven out might take on new names of their choosing.   Spiritborn Traits

Their connection to the elemental spirit within them usual shows itself somewhere in their early teenage years, often after some traumatic event in their life. Later, their body will change as well, such as in fiery red hair, cloudy grey eyes, cool bluish skin or a roughening of the features as if they were chiseled from stone.

  • Divineblood The Spiritborn who become vessels to a spirit that is divine in nature often discover this later than others, as they become young adults in many cases. Though this in some ways makes it easier to deal with the changes facing them, they are often the ones most cursed by their nature, for the spirits within them are powerful and uncompromising. Only the strongest willed Spiritborn can coexist with these spirits without going mad, and thus it is no surprise that these are the rarest of their kind. The physical changes usually show in the eyes most; glowing gold if the spirit is angelic, burning red if it is devilish, and coal black for those unfortunate enough to be inhabited by a demonic spirit.
