Sarah la Christi

Sarah of Jerusalem was born to the Jewish rabbi Jesus of Nazareth and his wife Marie Magdalene of Bethany.   When she was eight years old, her father was arrested and executed. Shortly after his death, her father returned to life for 40 days before ascending into heaven. After that, several family friends tried to murder her mother, forcing her family to flee via boat to the edge of the known world.   And then she turned nine.   At an early age, Sarah saw the horror of the world - poverty, disease, brutality, betrayal. She also saw her father and mother and aunt and uncle walk into danger speaking a message of kindness and unity. She saw her father murdered for that message, and saw her mother carry it on nonetheless.   Sarah learned to survive. Her brother was born in Gaul and knew no other life, but Sarah remembered what came before.   As Sarah grew older and entered young adulthood, she looked to her own survival and that of her family. Her mother had done much to secure a place for them, but Gaul was a wild land; warlords raided nearby towns, stealing what they wanted and killing who they pleased. Her mother's message of peace often fell on deaf ears. Her brother's more fiery approach was years yet to come. During that time between, it fell to Sarah to bring the word of God to Gaul.   She did so with any and every means at her disposal. She'd learned much of secrets and betrayal back home in Jerusalem, and she employed those skills in Gaul, relying on guile and trickery. And, when the time came, she used her body as well, selling herself into marriage to broker a lasting peace. Even then, she was not done, working from the shadows to protect her wild younger brother.   When she had children of her own, she taught them the same philosophy - the only way to bring peace is through power. Not strength of arms, as her brother believed, but the ability to control events. Through love of family does a family survive. Through love of nation does a nation grow and prosper. Through love of god does one have the strength to do what is needful.   And yet, she had not forgotten her father's sacrifice either. Through sacrifice, one can protect one's family, one's future. One may fall so that many may survive.   She wrote all this down in her gospel. Many found it confusing, for her words often conflicted with one another - at one time preaching survival at all cost, at another preaching self sacrifice, at another preaching love of family, at another preaching to trust no one but the gods above. But her words were never meant to be taken all of a piece. Instead, each part serves her goal, words to be used when needful.   This she taught to her children, who taught it to theirs, who taught it to theirs. Down through the centuries, they guarded her brother's line from the shadows. Even unto Charles Martel, who protected the fledgling nation of France from invasion.   From her seat in heaven, Sarah watches over France. She patrons rulers and politicians. To her faithful priests and priestesses, she grants healing as her mother and father, the ability to discern lies from truth, and the ability to pass unseen. To a chosen few, such as Jehanne d'Arc, she grants whatever is needful, although what Sarah considers needful can be hard to predict.
