Montpellier (duchy)

Montpellier refers to both the duchy of Montpellier and it's capital the city of Montpellier from which the Duc de Montpellier rules. Although historically a duchy, Montpellier spent nearly a century as a royal holding of the King of France before being awarded by the King to a new Duc to rule.
Over the centuries, both France and Aragon have claimed ownership of Montpellier, leading to many wars and the territory being captured and liberated - although it has been over a century since Aragon last held control over the ducny. As such, there tends to be a greater blending of social customs and mores between those of France and Aragon than elsewhere in France.
