Grysta, the Maiden of Departure

"Cherish this moment my child, for one must always mind their own mortality...”

The Maiden of Departure

Grysta(Gree-stuh), the maiden of Departure, mother of ravens, and twin sister of Aralia, is the embodiment of all that is finite. As the Black Pillar of the Tent Divine, Grysta is the final trial for the souls of mortals wishing to enter to the afterlife. Weighing the sins, piety, and virtue of their former life as they enter their final judgement, Grysta is tasked with evaluating every action a mortal has taken over their entire life on Eyre. Should the soul be deemed worthy of their god's divine embrace, they are whisked to their rewarded afterlife within the High heavens they had earned for their actions. However, should the soul be deemed unworthy, a bargain is made. If the afflicted soul can prove that their actions were not for ill, their punishment will be lightened. If they cannot, or choose to lie to the mother of ravens, the soul is cast to a lower plane, to be punished for all eternity within the plane of the Chains of Yarenil. She is portrayed as a dark and mysterious black four-winged seraph in robes of deep black and grey. Her skin is a smooth and pale alabaster. Her hair is a rippling wave of cascading obsidian. On her soft and beautiful face, seat hollow eyes that gaze into the soul and pore over the memories of a mortal’s life.

The Shadow Moor

The Maiden of Departure rules the realm of the Shadow Moors, a gloomy reflection of the material plane, devoid of all color and life. After death, the servants of the maiden collect and retrieve the souls of the fallen to be delivered to this barren plane. Her stone castle floats above the Shadow Moors in the dark lands of Departure, appearing as a solemn black silhouette against the bleak, desaturated sky.

The Mother of Ravens

Carrion ravens are thought to be the messengers of Grysta and these winged heralds that notify followers of Grysta when a loved one has fallen. These birds also spell doom for those the ravens choose as their perch as this act is considered an omen of death. Clerics of Grysta understand death to be a natural end of life, and do not work to end lives and will strive to prevent murder or disease, but also will not sway in the occurrence of natural death, for all souls are not meant for this world for long, and to pass to the Shadow Moors is an honorable fate that all mortals will soon face. A priest of this faith prepares the rites of passage to the dead and instills confidence and hope in the people the departed leave behind.

"...As she placed her finger upon his head, an incorporeal strand writhed from his brow, an ichor-black thread dotted with ethereal white pearls. These pearls danced with sporadic movements of light, with tiny images flickering across the ghostly marbles. They were memories, of a time the Denari King had long since forgotten..."
